The Somoni ( Tajik Сомонӣ / Somonij ; Russian сомони ) is the currency of Tajikistan .

A somoni is divided into 100 dirams. The somoni replaced the Tajik ruble on October 30, 2000 , the exchange rate was 1 somoni for 1000 rubles. Initially only banknotes were issued, since 2001 coins as well. The banknotes are made from 100% cotton and have the following denominations:

  • 1, 5, 20 and 50 dirams
  • 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 somoni

The following coins are in circulation:

  • 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 dirams
  • 1, 3 and 5 somoni

However, the small banknotes are generally preferred to coins. In particular, the coins for 1, 3 and 5 somoni are rarely in circulation.

The name Somoni is derived from the Samanids . The Samanids were a Persian dynasty in Central Asia . The currency was named after the Tajik father of the nation , the Samanid ruler Ismail I (Tajik Исмоил Сомонӣ Ismoil Somonij ).
