The Qatari riyal ( Arabic ريال قطري, DMG riyāl qaṭarī ) is the currency of the Gulf State of Qatar , it has been largely pegged to the US dollar at a ratio of 3.64 to 1 since 1980 . One Qatari riyal is in 100 dirhams (دراهم / darāhim , singular:درهم, DMG dirham ).

The name riyal is derived from the Spanish real , which was the currency in Spain for several centuries (derived from Spanish rey = king). The riyal has been the currency of Qatar since 1966, until 1973 as a common currency with the Trucial States with the exception of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi . Before that, the Gulf rupee was in use from 1959 and the Saudi riyal for a short time in 1966 .

There are currently considerations to replace the riyal with a common currency of the Gulf states .

Coins and banknotes

The Central Bank of Qatar issues banknotes to the value of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 riyals and coins to the value of 25 and 50 dirhams. Governor of the Qatari Central Bank has been Abdullah Bin Saoud Al Thani since 2006 .
