The dram ( Armenian դրամ or հայկական դրամ) is the currency of Armenia . It is issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia . The currency symbol of the Dram is the capital letter Դ (da) of the Armenian alphabet crossed by two horizontal lines, this can be represented with the Unicode character code U + 058F.
1 dram is divided into 100 luma (Armenian լումա). However, Luma coins were only in circulation for a short time. The dram was introduced on November 22, 1993, it replaced the Russian ruble , 200 rubles were exchanged for 1 dram.
There are banknotes in circulation of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and, since September 2009, 100,000. The following coins are in circulation: 10 Dram (two different versions made of aluminum), 20 Dram (copper), 50 Dram (copper), 100 Dram (nickel), 200 Dram ( Nordic gold ), 500 Dram (nickel / Nordic gold).
The dram is also legal tender in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh . There is also a Nagorno-Karabakh drama .
etymology
Similar to the words for the Arabic dirham and the Anglo-American unit of measurement dram, the currency name comes from the ancient Greek drachma ( δραχμή ) and was borrowed from ancient Persian.
Banknotes
Second series (1998-2017)
The 50, 100 and 500 dram notes were taken out of circulation and replaced by coins of the same face value. The 50,000 dram banknote was introduced in 2001 in connection with the “1700 years of Christianity in Armenia” anniversary.
