Lori (  [ lɔˈri ] , Armenian Լոռու մարզ , Loṙu marz ) is a province in northern Armenia . It borders in the north on Georgia , in the west on the province of Shirak , in the south on Aragazotn and Kotajk and in the east on Tavush . The capital is Vanadzor . The area is 3789 km² and the population is 217,103 (as of 2011). The climate is relatively mild because mountain ranges protect against cold snaps from the north. Please click to listen!Play

Other cities besides Vanadzor are Alaverdi , Spitak , Stepanavan and Tashir and raised in the 1990s to cities earlier settlements of urban type Achtala , Schamlugh and Tumanyan . In addition to these eight urban parishes, there are 105 rural parishes with a total of 122 villages; the largest villages (each with over 2000 inhabitants) are Arewaschogh , Dschraschen , Gugark , Kurtan , Margahowit , Mezawan , Odsun and Schnogh (as of 2011). Until the 1990s, today's village of Dzoraget also had the status of an urban-type settlement.

The province was during the administrative reorganization within the framework of decentralization in 1995 from the since 1930/37 Armenian SSR of the Soviet Union existing Rajons Gugark, Spitak, Stepanavan, Tashir (until 1991 Kalinino ) and Tumanyan and the rajonfreien cities Alaverdi, Spitak, Stepanavan and Vanadzor formed.

The area was badly affected by the Spitak earthquake in 1988 , especially the southern part with the cities of Spitak, Stepanawan and Vanadzor and their surroundings.

Lori is home to the monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin two World Heritage Sites of UNESCO . They were built in the 10th to 13th centuries and, along with the Akhtala monastery and Geghard monastery near Yerevan with their libraries and schools, formed the spiritual center of medieval Armenia. In the province there are the ruins of the monasteries Bardzrakash , Chuchap and Srbanes .
