Spitak ( Armenian Սպիտակ , formerly Amamth or Amamlu , Russian Спита́к ) is a city in northern Armenia .

It is in the province of Lori .
Spitak is located in an area where there is a high risk of earthquakes . The former city of Spitak was in the area of two tectonic plates . The city was rebuilt in a different position after the devastating earthquake of December 7, 1988 .
At the 2001 census, the official population was 14,984. According to official statistics, there were 15,146 inhabitants in Spitak in January 2009, and 18,885 people lived in the city in 2009.
history
The 1988 earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale , killing 25,000 people. The Spitak cemetery with a quickly erected church made of sheet zinc became a memorial to the thousands of dead in the earthquake .

Street
The M3 expressway leads from the Georgian border in the north via Stepanawan to Spitak and further over the 2378 m high Spitak pass ( Spitaki l-tsk ) past the junction to Gyumri in the village of Alagyaz towards Yerevan . The M7 connects Spitak directly with Gyumri to the west. To the east, the M6 runs downstream in the Pambak valley via Vanadzor and, after its confluence with the Debed, via Alaverdi to the Georgian border.
railroad
The city has a train station on the Tbilisi – Yerevan railway line , which opened in 1899.
