Map of Armenia

The list of cities in Armenia provides an overview of the development of the population of all cities in Armenia .

By far the largest agglomeration in Armenia is the capital Yerevan with a population of just under 1 million. This means that around a third of the country's residents live in the region.

history

The since 782 BC Chr. Detectable by the Urartians as Erebuni founded today's capital Yerevan is also the oldest city in the country. When the Republic of Armenia gained independence in late 1991, there were 27 cities and 31 urban-type settlements in the country . The urban-type settlement category introduced in the Soviet Union was abolished in Armenia as part of “decentralization” in the 1990s, and 20 of the settlements, mostly the more populous ones, were given city rights. Ten of the rest were downgraded to villages (rural communities), one - Sowetaschen  - was renamed Nubaraschen and incorporated into Yerevan. Two former villages also received city status: Jeghward and finally Ajrum . So there are 49 cities in Armenia today.

List of cities

The following table contains all the places in the country that currently have city status, their names in German transcription and Armenian spelling, the results of the census of January 28th jul. / February 9, 1897 greg. , January 15, 1959, January 22, 1970, January 17, 1979, January 12, 1989 and October 10, 2001, as well as a calculation for January 1, 2009. The province (Armenian mars ) to which the city belongs is also listed heard. The capital Yerevan does not belong to any of the provinces, but forms an independent administrative unit. The 2001 population figures relate to the people living de facto in the cities as well as the actual cities without suburban belts; the figures for 2009 are de jure population figures. The population figures are, if available, also given for the years before the respective place acquired city status.
