Nor Hatschn ( Armenian Նոր Հաճն ) is a city in the province of Kotayk in central Armenia . It was founded in 1953 and is located on the right side of the Hrasdan River .

history

The initially small settlement was founded in the Soviet era near the village of Arzni in 1953 to serve as housing for the workers of new hydropower plants in the vicinity. This concerned v. a. the Arzni hydropower plant, which started operations in 1956. At first the settlement was known as "Silowoj", the Russian name for the power plant. As a result, a stone processing factory was established (1958), as well as other industrial facilities, whereupon the settlement was expanded to a small town. In the 1960s, the city was given the current name Nor Hatschn (German: Neu-Haçin ), named after the formerly largely Armenian-settled town of Haçin in Cilicia , which is now Saimbeyli .

Between 1988 and 1990, 374 Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan were resettled in the city. With the collapse of the Soviet planned economy and after Armenia gained independence in 1991, most of the city's industrial facilities had to close. Since the 1990s and 2000s, however, new diamond processing factories have also been opened in the village.

traffic

The city is connected to the rail network. A small train station is located south of the village. To the west is the Arzni airfield with a military pilot academy.
