Jermuk ( Armenian Ջերմուկ , in scientific transliteration J̌ermowk, IPA : [ d͡ʒɛɹ'mɯk ]) is a health resort in Armenia .
Jermuk had 4,346 inhabitants at the 2011 census and is located in a scenic area of the Vajoz Dzor province , where there are many thermal springs . That is why Jermuk was developed into a well-known health resort during the Soviet era . Mineral water is also bottled here. The access road leads past the Gndevank monastery above the Arpa valley .
The town of Jermuk ( Ջերմուկի քաղաքային համայնք , Jermuki kaghakajin hamajnk ) includes the town of Kechut , about four kilometers south, with 884 inhabitants, so that the total population of the municipality is 5230 (as of 2011).
After the economic boom set in in Armenia in the second half of the 1990s after years of crisis, plans are now being made to give Jermuk a new look. The game of chess, which is very popular in Armenia, should also contribute to this. An international youth tournament has been held here every year since 2006. The first winner was the Armenian youth world champion Sawen Andriasjan . The top Armenian players often prepare for bigger tournaments in Jermuk, such as Eg the Armenian national team around Levon Aronjan before the victory at the Chess Olympiad in Turin 2006. From August 8th to 24th, 2009 the fifth of six Grand Prix tournaments of the World Chess Federation took place in Jermuk, which was part of the qualification cycle for the World Chess Championship .
