Grafwegen is a district of the municipality of Kranenburg in the Kleve district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Old school Grafwegen

The name Grafwegen is mentioned for the first time in 1294/95, but there were three settlements with this name in the immediate vicinity in the Klevisch-Geldrischen border area. Grafwegen, which today belongs to the municipality of Kranenburg, was only mentioned explicitly in 1572. At that time, forest servants of the Klever Duke lived here , who belonged to the parish of Kranenburg.

The place, located directly on the Dutch border, is very isolated from the German side and can only be reached via two roads, one of which leads through the Reichswald (the card player path is closed to car traffic), the other leads directly along the national border. Until 1936 Grafwegen was under the office of Kessel and was then assigned to the office of Kranenburg. The predominantly Protestant population belongs to the Evangelical parish of Kranenburg, the Parish of Frasselt is responsible for the Catholics . The place has less than 100 inhabitants. With 42 eligible voters (2002), Grafwegen is the smallest voting district in North Rhine-Westphalia.
