Niel is mentioned for the first time in 891/92 by an entry of a donation to the Lorsch monastery in the Codex Laureshamensis . The place belonged in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period to the office of Düffel ; he formed a common judicial district with Mehr .

By the 13th century at the latest, Niel was the seat of a parish (Bonifatius). The current Gothic parish church probably dates from the 15th century; it contains a baptismal font from the first half of the 13th century. In the second half of the 15th century, the Geldrian historian Wilhelm van Berchem was pastor of Niel. Since 2005 it has belonged to the parish of St. Antonius Abbas with its seat in Nütterden .

The so-called battle in the Reichswald took place in spring 1945 in the nearby Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's town . The place was badly damaged.

On July 1, 1969, Niel was incorporated into Kranenburg. With only 222 inhabitants, it is one of the villages that has most preserved its original character over the 20th century.
