Tashir ( Armenian Տաշիր ) is a city in the province of Lori in northern Armenia, not far from the border with Georgia . The place was founded in 1844.
history
The city was founded at the time when the area of present-day Armenia, historical Eastern Armenia , was a province of the Russian Empire . In 1844 the place was founded by Russian settlers from the Saratov region under the name Vorontsovka . It was named after the Russian viceroy of the Caucasus, Mikhail Semjonowitsch Voronzow (1782-1856). In 1846 the place became part of the Tbilisi Governorate .
Under Soviet rule, the place was renamed in 1935 in Kalinino after Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin (1875-1946). In 1961 the town was given urban-type settlement status and became the center of the new Kalinino district . In 1983 the settlement received full city status.
After the independence of Armenia in 1991, the place was renamed again and was given the current name Tashir in memory of a historic canton during the time of the Kingdom of Armenia . After a nationwide administrative reform in 1995, the city was assigned to the province of Lori.
