Vanadzor ( Armenian Վանաձոր ) is the capital of the province of Lori in Armenia and at the same time third largest city in the country. She went from the originally grown for City Village Gharakilisa out and was called in Soviet time 1935-1992 Kirowakan . The city is 125 km by road and 224 km by rail from the Armenian capital Yerevan .
geography
With 107,394 (2001) inhabitants, Vanadzor is the third largest city in Armenia, after Yerevan and Gyumri . It extends in a valley between the Pambak and Bazum mountains . With the city's rivers flow Vanadzor , Pambak and Tandsut .
history
Until 1828 there was a black church in Vanadzor, in the place of which a new building was built in 1831. The city was originally named Karakilis ( Ղարաքիլիսա , Каракилис ) after this building , which means “Black Church” in Turkish . After the death of Sergei Kirov in 1934 it was in his honor in 1935 Kirowakan ( Կիրովական , Кировакан renamed). After the independence of Armenia, the name was changed to Vanadzor , named after the Vanadzor river that flows through the city.
On December 7, 1988, a severe earthquake struck the Lori region in the north of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic , killing 25,000 people. The then Kirowakan also suffered severe damage.
Economy and Transport
The chemical and mechanical engineering industries are mainly represented in Vanadzor.
The city has a train station on the Tbilisi – Yerevan railway line .
education
Vanadzor is the seat of two universities, the Vanadzor State University , founded in 1969 and named after Howhannes Tumanjan (1869–1932), and the private Armenian-Russian International University , founded in 1995 and named after Mchitar Gosh (1130–1213). In addition, both the National Polytechnic University of Armenia and the Armenian National Agricultural University , which are headquartered in Yerevan, each have a campus in the city.
The city has five libraries, four art, three music and ten sports schools.
Culture
Vanadzor is the seat of the Armenian Constitutional Right-Protective Center .
