The Tbilisi – Yerevan railway connects the capitals of Georgia and Armenia , Tbilisi and Yerevan .

history

Today's Tbilisi – Yerevan line is historically made up of two sections: The first was a line that was built from Tbilisi to Kars (today: Turkey ) and branching off the Poti – Baku railway. It went into operation on December 5, 1899, at a time when both of its endpoints were in the Russian Empire . Second, branching off from the Taribjanian junction near Gyumri , a line to Yerevan was built, which was put into operation on May 1, 1902.

As a result of the First World War , a new border was drawn between the Soviet Union and Turkey. The border now ran immediately west of Gyumri ( Leninakan ), the next station in this direction, Achurian , became the border station. Cross-border traffic took place here, but the Tbilisi-Yerevan connection had become the main route and the kilometers were adjusted. The line was electrified in sections between 1957 and 1966 .

After the independence of the Caucasus states in 1991, the Georgian section of the route is now operated by the Sakartwelos Rkinigsa , the Armenian section by the Harawkowkasjan Jerkatughi .

With the independence of Armenia, the subsequent profound differences between Turkey and Armenia and the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh , all other international rail lines in Armenia are out of service. The only international train in the country runs on the Tbilisi – Yerevan route. This runs several times a week to Tbilisi and runs daily to and from Batumi on the Black Sea in summer .

The route is 365 kilometers long. It was built in Russian broad gauge and is electrified with 3000 V direct current throughout .
