Sanahin ( Armenian Սանահին ) is a district of the city of Alaverdi in the north of the Lori province in Armenia .

geography

Sanahin lies on a plateau within sight of Haghpat , from which it is separated by a deep gorge that a small tributary of the Debed has dug.

The name Sanahin literally means “This is older than any” in Armenian, and documents the claim that the monastery is older than the one in Haghpat. The two villages and their monasteries are similar in many ways.
