The Harawkowkasjan Jerkatughi ( Armenian Հարավկովկասյան Երկաթուղի ; Russian Южно-Кавказская Железная Дорога ; German South Caucasian Railway ) is the most important railway company in Armenia . It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Russian Railways (RŽD), which has been operating the railway in Armenia for 30 years since June 1st, 2008 after winning a tender . Harawkowkasjan Jerkatughi took over all the facilities, vehicles and the 4,300 employees from Hajkakan Jerkatughi, which had operated the railways in Armenia until then.

Route network

The 845 km long route network has 1,520 millimeter broad gauge , is electrified with 3000 V direct current and mostly single-track. 736 kilometers are in operation and around 110 kilometers are out of operation due to landslides and closings of the borders with the neighboring countries Turkey and Azerbaijan (due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ). At the moment there is only one international connection to Georgia , which runs from Yerevan via Gyumri and Vanadzor through the Lesser Caucasus to Tbilisi . There is no rail connection to Iran . The Armenian railroad company plans to invest US $ 400 million to improve the infrastructure during the concession period . Route extensions to the Georgian Black Sea ports of Batumi and Poti were also planned. However, the Armenian government is dissatisfied with the management of the railway, as in 2008 only about 30 percent of the committed investments were made. In April 2009, an agreement was reached with the Iranian government to build a railway line between Armenia and Iran, bypassing the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhichevan . Of the 470 km long route, 410 km have to be built on Armenian territory alone through mountainous terrain in the south of the country.

Vehicle inventory

2000 freight wagons , 58 passenger cars , 85 locomotives and 30 electric multiple units were taken over from the Armenian Railway . In the next few years, 170 million US dollars are to be invested in the renewal of the vehicle fleet.

Traffic figures

In 1988 the Armenian Railways reached a peak with the transport of approximately 38 million tons of freight and 4.6 million passengers . Due to the destruction caused by the earthquake in 1988 , the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the neglect of the railway tracks and increasing motorization, the annual transport numbers fell to 1.3 million tons of freight and 0.9 million passengers by 2000. By 2004, goods traffic rose again to 2.6 million tons, while passenger traffic stagnated. The new concessionaire Harawkowkasjan Jerkatughi expects that the planned investments totaling 570 million US dollars will increase the annual transport volume to 30 million tons.
