Akhtala ( Armenian Ախթալա ) is a city in the province of Lori in northeastern Armenia, not far from Georgia . The municipality of Akhtala also includes the Schamlugh, once known for its copper mining .

history

There was a fortress near the city as early as the 10th century, of which ruins are still preserved. The historic Akhtala Monastery is also nearby. Akhtala settlement remained a village until 1939, when it was given urban-type settlement status under Soviet rule . After the independence of Armenia, the city status was confirmed in 1995.
