Tilman Jeremias

Tilman Jeremias (* 1966 in Mainz ) is a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and bishop for the Mecklenburg and Pomerania district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

Life

Tilman Jeremias comes from a family of theologians ( Joachim Jeremias , Jörg Jeremias ) and grew up in Groebenzell near Munich in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . After a voluntary social year in a day care center for mentally ill children, he studied Protestant theology at the universities in Munich , Tübingen and Leipzig ; in Jerusalem he spent a year of theological studies at the Dormition Abbey . He completed his vicariate in Thürkow near Teterow , in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg .

Jeremias was ordained pastor in the Mecklenburg regional church in 1995. His first pastor was in Schwaan near Rostock . In 2001/2002 he was the spokesman for the ARD program “ Das Wort zum Sonntag ”. In 2003 he moved to Rostock's inner city parish as pastor, with a focus on St. Mary's Church .

In 2016 the Mecklenburg Church District appointed him pastor for mission and ecumenism in the Rostock Center for Church Services. He also had a teaching position at the theological faculty of the University of Rostock .

On March 1, 2019, the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany elected him bishop in the district of Mecklenburg and Pomerania. In the first ballot he received the necessary majority of 79 out of 150 votes. He succeeds Andreas von Maltzahn and Hans-Jürgen Abromeit , as it had been agreed in the course of the formation of the Northern Church that there should only be one bishop in the Mecklenburg and Pomerania district in the future. His office will be Greifswald . The ceremonial introduction to the office also took place in Greifswald Cathedral on October 31, 2019, Reformation Day .

He is divorced and has three children.
