Stepanavan ( Armenian Ստեփանավան ; also Stepanavan ; to 1923 Dzhalal-Ogly or Dschalaloghly ) is in the north of Armenia and after Vanadzor the second largest city of the province of Lori . The Dzoraget river cuts the city in two parts, which have been connected by a 220-meter-long bridge since 1980.
The roots of the kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget are believed to be in the southern part of the city in the 10th century . The history of the northern part begins in the 12th century with the construction of the Church of St. Sargis . Since 1214, the Hasan-Dschalalian royal house ruled the region , which gave the city its later name ( Jalaloghly , in German son of Jalal ). The city was given its current name in 1923 in honor of the Armenian politician Stepan Shahumyan .
On December 7, 1988, large parts of the city were destroyed by the Spitak earthquake . Since May 1992 there has been a town partnership with the French town of Décines-Charpieu in the Rhône department . In 2009 there were about 20,143 people in Stepanawan.
