Hrasdan ( Armenian Հրազդան , scientific transliteration and English transcription Hrazdan , IPA : [ həraz'dan ]) is the capital of the Armenian province of Kotajk .
geography
Hrasdan is the fifth largest city in Armenia and has around 40,000 inhabitants (as of 2005).
The name of the city and the Hrasdan river flowing by it goes back to the Middle Persian word phrasdana .
history
The 13th century Church of Our Lady of the Makrawank Monastery is located in the Makrawan suburb . An associated chapel from the 11th century and a gawit are only preserved as ruins.
During the Soviet era , Hrasdan was one of the most important industrial locations for the Armenian SSR .
traffic
The city is located on the M4 motorway between Yerevan and Sevan and on the Yerevan – Sotk railway line , which was closed for a long time due to the disputes resulting from the independence of Armenia and is now only operated sporadically.
