Spitak cemetery and memorial

The Spitak Cemetery is the cemetery of the small Armenian town of Spitak .

On December 7, 1988, the Spitak earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale . According to official reports, around 25,000 deaths were reported. Because the destruction within the old town of Spitak had reached enormous proportions, a new settlement was founded nearby for the surviving inhabitants, which in turn bears the name Spitak. As a memorial to the events surrounding the earthquake, the Spitak municipal cemetery became the mass grave of thousands of dead.

In the middle of the complex, which is located on a hill on the outskirts, a church was built as a place of worship as a sign of a new beginning. The church, which was quickly erected with a silvery shimmering zinc sheet cladding, symbolizes the indestructible trust in God of the Armenian believers.
