The Indonesian Rupiah is the currency of the State of Indonesia . The common international abbreviation is IDR .
history
The rupiah became official with the establishment of the state of Indonesia in 1949. It was introduced in 1946 after the unilateral declaration of independence in 1945. The rupiah was not internationally recognized until the end of the War of Independence when sovereignty was transferred in Amsterdam on December 27, 1949 .
The current rupiah was introduced in December 1965 at the value of 1000 old rupiah. It is freely convertible on the currency market .
There have been plans for a currency reform since at least 2006 which provide for the removal of three zeros from the nominal values again. These have recently been postponed again (August 2013).
Current coins and notes
Indonesian rupiah are available in the following denominations:
- Banknotes in values of 100, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 rupiah
- Coins in values of 1, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 rupiah.
The banknotes of 100 and 500 rupiah are no longer to be found, coins of 25 and 50 rupiah are extremely rare. In retail, rounding is used, but change amounts less than 100 IDR are often replaced by a candy that cannot be used to pay. The 25 rupiah coins can no longer be found in the catalog of the National Bank, which however shows a 1 rupiah coin from 1970 as valid currency.
The division of 1 rupiah to 100 sen is only of historical significance and is practically nonexistent today. To what extent the Sen will be reintroduced after a currency cut remains to be seen.
Most recently, a coin worth 200 Rp. Was put into circulation. Banknotes of 20,000 Rp. And 100,000 Rp. Have been available in a new design since the end of 2004; the previous issues remain valid. New 50,000 Rp. Notes are also in circulation. In 2009 new 2000 cent. Notes were issued.
In 2010 a new 10,000 rupiah banknote was issued, the design of the old 10,000 rupiah banknote (first edition 2005, reprinted 2009), but with new security features and a bluish red in color; in 2014 the 100,000 was modernized accordingly. In 2010 a new 1,000 rupiah coin also appeared. It is noteworthy that with the appearance of the new design, the only woman ( Cut Nyak Dhien from Aceh ) disappeared from the banknotes.
On December 19, 2016, a completely new series of banknotes with the values 1,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 / 20,000 / 50,000 / 100,000 rupiah was released. All banknotes are signed by Agus Martowardojo, Governor of Bank Indonesia, and Sri Mulyani Indrawati, the current Minister of Finance.
The watermarks of the new banknotes have been carried over from the banknotes of the previous series.
