The traditional British company De La Rue plc. was founded in 1821 by Thomas de la Rue and is now the world's largest non-governmental manufacturer of banknotes . Over 150 national currencies and numerous security documents such as travelers checks are produced with the support of the security printer. Former business fields were the printing of postage stamps, security documents and playing cards as well as the production of writing implements.

The company employs over 4,000 people in 24 countries. De La Rue plc. is listed on the FTSE 250 Index of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) under the symbol DLAR. A total of 98 million shares were issued with a market capitalization of 928 million British pounds.

In September 2008, De La Rue sold its cash management division as part of a management buyout , which has since operated as an independent company under the name Talaris . In 2018, the company examined legal proceedings against the decision of the British government to have the new passports printed in France, but then decided against it due to a lack of success.
