Colombes ( French [ kɔˈlõb ]) is a French industrial city with 85,177 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the greater Paris area . It is located around ten kilometers northwest of Paris city center in the Hauts-de-Seine department between Courbevoie and Argenteuil on the south bank of the Seine . The inhabitants are called Colombiens .

history

The area around Colombes has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The place name comes from the Latin columna = column and is reminiscent of either a megalithic cult column or the columns of a Gallo-Roman villa that was located here. A grave field is occupied for the Merovingian period. The village of Colombes had been under the Abbey of Saint-Denis since the early Middle Ages . With the construction of the Pont de Neuilly over the Seine, the traffic situation of the place located in a Seine loop improved, from which the trade benefited, so that increasingly wealthy merchants settled in the place; Queen Henrietta Maria of France , daughter of Henry IV , also had a close relationship with this place, where she lived from 1657 and finally died in 1669.

At the beginning of the 19th century, two more Seine bridges were built, the Pont de Bezons (1811) and the Pont d'Argenteuil (1832). A rail connection with the stations Colombes-Center and Bois-Colombes was added in the 1850s. Impressionists such as Monet, Caillebotte and Sisley came to Colombes to visit the quaint river port of Petit Gennevilliers.

Although the districts of Bois-Colombes and La Garenne-Colombes were separated from the municipality of Colombes in 1896 and 1910, it continued to grow and reached 10,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century. Larger companies settled here, such as the tire manufacturer Goodrich in 1911, the aircraft manufacturer Amiot in 1917 or the Ericsson telephone factory and the engine manufacturer Gnôme. In addition, Colombes became known as a center of perfume production with companies such as Guerlain, Sauzé and Dorin.

Modern housing developments emerged in Colombes between the world wars. The city became known nationwide above all as a center of sport. A sports complex with a swimming pool, ice rink and tennis courts was built on the Île Marante. On the occasion of the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir , with a capacity of 60,000 , has been named after the prominent rugby player Yves du Manoir since 1929 and which was also one of the venues for the 1938 World Cup . With the outbreak of the Second World War, it was converted into a large internment camp, mainly accommodating emigrants from Germany and Austria.

During the Second World War , Colombes was largely spared from destruction. There was a camp here in which the journalist Otto Leichter , the writer Soma Morgenstern and the artist Erich Sauer were temporarily interned.

The infrastructure was further expanded in the post-war period. An additional high school and the Louis Mourier hospital , named after the French politician of the same name, were created. In addition, Colombes was connected to the A86 motorway.

politics

Colombes is divided into the two cantons Colombes-1 and Colombes-2 . Until its dissolution in 2015, Colombes belonged to the cantons of Colombes-Nord-Est , Colombes-Nord-Ouest and Colombes-Sud .

From 2001 to 2008 Nicole Goueta from the UMP was mayor, in 2008 she was replaced by Philippe Sarre from the PS , and Nicole Goueta has been in office again since 2014.
