Steven Nkemboanza Mike Nzonzi (born December 15, 1988 in La Garenne-Colombes ) is a French football player . The defensive midfielder has Congolese roots and has been under contract with Stade Rennes as a loaner from AS Roma since the end of January 2020 . At the 2018 World Cup in Russia , he was world champion with the French national team .

Athletic career

Nzonzi was born in Colombes on the outskirts of the French capital. He started kicking the ball for Sporting Levallois when he was only five years old, and five years later he was accepted into the “Camp des Loges”, the Paris Saint-Germain school for children and teenagers . There, the tall Nzonzi first acted in the forward position and then as an attacking midfielder. However, he did not settle down with the prestigious Paris club and so he moved to the Norman CA Lisieux in July 2002 , where he only spent one year, however, as he did afterwards at SM Caen and AS Beauvais .

In the summer of 2005, the next club followed with the northern French SC Amiens . There Nzonzi first gained experience in the amateur league CFA and after a first substitution in the French Cup against Raismes-Vicoigne (7-0), he made his debut in the Ligue on April 15, 2008 against the Corsican club SC Bastia (0-1) 2 . After a total of three league appearances at the end of the 2007/08 season, SC Amiens equipped him with a professional contract and Nzonzi held the role of central defensive midfielder 34 times in the subsequent 2008/09 season. Although the club had to move into the third division in the end with relegation, the professional world paid him recognition for the performance shown and rumors about an imminent move to England quickly increased.

In July 2009, the English first division club Blackburn Rovers presented Nzonzi as a new addition; The parties involved kept silent about the amount of the transfer fee. The newcomer quickly showed himself to be a great addition to the “Rovers” team. With 33 league appearances, the "little Vieira " - in addition to the similar style of play, Nzonzi stated that he had emulated Vieira as an idol since winning the World Cup in 1998 - had a significant share in the secure tenth midfield place in the Premier League . His long-range goal against Everton shortly before the end of the 2009/10 season received particular attention and his club then honored him as the best player of the past season for his achievements. In addition, the Rovers equipped their new hope in August 2010 with a new long-term five-year contract. For the 2015/16 season, Nzonzi moved to Sevilla FC .

On August 14, 2018, he joined AS Roma . Just a year later he moved to Galatasaray Istanbul in the Turkish Süper Lig on loan . Until the end of the 2019/20 season, Galatasaray has a purchase option of 16 million euros and an option for a further loan deal, which would amount to 500,000 euros. At the end of the 2020/21 season, Galatasaray has a further purchase option of 13 million euros. Nzonzi was suspended indefinitely by head coach Fatih Terim in mid-December . The reason was indiscipline behavior during a training session. Galatasaray Istanbul terminated the loan agreement with Nzonzi at the end of January 2020.

As a result, Nzonzi was loaned to Stade Rennes by AS Roma towards the end of the transfer phase .

French national team

After a successful sporting breakthrough in the top English division, France's U-21 coach Erick Mombaerts nominated him for the first time in October 2009 for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. There Nzonzi celebrated his debut against Malta (2-0) and followed four days later against Belgium (0-0) in the second game.

In November 2017, Nzonzi made his debut in the senior national team . With her he was in the 2018 World Cup in Russia champion .
