Samuel Yves Umtiti (born November 14, 1993 in Yaoundé , Cameroon ) is a French football player . The central defender , who is also used as a left full-back , is under contract with FC Barcelona . He has French citizenship and that of his native Cameroon.

Career

Olympique Lyon

Umtiti moved to Villeurbanne in France at the age of two . A few months later the family settled in the Ménival district of Lyon . He then moved to the local football club Ménival FC at the age of five and to the youth academy of Olympique Lyon at the age of nine .

Umtiti was integrated into the professional squad for the 2011/12 season . On January 8, 2012, he made his professional debut at the Coupe de France in a 1: 3 away win at Lyon-Duchère AS. He played as a central defender for the entire season. His first game in Ligue 1 , the French league, he played on January 14, 2012 in the 1-0 away defeat against HSC Montpellier . From the quarterfinals of the Coupe de la Ligue 2011/12, he played every game in central defense for the entire season. The team lost to Olympique Marseille in the final. Umtiti won the French Cup with his team. On April 18, he played for the first time as a left full-back.

In the 2012/13 season he was a substitute player. From the 8th day of play he collected more and more playing time. Umtiti scored his first league goal in a 2-1 away win against ES Troyes AC as a left full-back. He played for the first time internationally in the UEFA Europa League group stage. In the 2013/14 season he established himself as a regular player and was on the field in 42 competitive games for Olympique Lyon this season. In the Europa League they were eliminated in the semifinals against Juventus Turin . For the 2014/15 season , Olympique was again in the Europa League qualification. The games against Mladá Boleslav were won; Umtiti scored one goal in the first leg. Olympique were eliminated by Astra Giurgiu . Umtiti also scored goals in the league.

FC Barcelona

For the 2016/17 season Umtiti moved to FC Barcelona for 25 million euros . He received a five-year contract dated June 30, 2021 with an exit clause of EUR 60 million.

From the U17 onwards, Umtiti went through all of France's junior national teams. With the U20 he won the U20 World Cup 2013 in Turkey . On August 13, 2013 he made his debut for the French U21 selection .

Shortly before the 2016 European Championship in his own country, he was called up as a substitute for the senior national team in a preparatory game against Cameroon , but was not used. He was nominated for the French squad for the European Championship and was one of two players without international appearances in the squad. When Adil Rami was banned in the quarterfinals because of his second yellow card, he made not only his tournament but also his international debut over 90 minutes on July 3rd. He was so convincing that he then played as a central defender in the semi-finals and in the final. France lost the final against Portugal 1-0 in extra time.

In May 2018 Umtiti was nominated by Didier Deschamps for the soccer world championship . On July 10, 2018, Umtiti and France won the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup , 1-0 against the Belgian national team ; Umtiti scored the goal with a header and was subsequently named player of the game. On July 15, 2018 Umtiti became world champion with the Équipe Tricolore .
