Benjamin Mendy (born July 17, 1994 in Longjumeau ) is a French football player with Senegalese roots who is currently under contract with Manchester City and plays for the French national team , with which he became world champion in 2018.

Career

Benjamin Mendy started playing football in Palaiseau , where he stayed until 2007. At the age of 13 he went to the French second division club AC Le Havre , where he first went through the youth teams. Soon he was next to Paul Pogba as the greatest talent of the club and already at the age of 16 he came to his first appearance in the second team in October 2010. At the same time he was still active for the U-19. In the summer of 2011 Mendy finally signed his first professional contract and immediately became a regular player. On August 12, 2011, at the age of 17, he made his Ligue 2 debut . With the club he reached 15th place at the end of the season . Le Havres was also the first choice as left-back in the 2012/13 season .

In the summer break of 2013 he was finally signed by the first division club Olympique Marseille . According to media reports, Mendy cost a transfer fee of around four million euros. On August 11, 2013 he made his competitive debut for Marseille in Ligue 1 . On the seventh day of the season he also scored the first goal of his professional career. A week later, Mendy was in a Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund for the first time in an international club game .

For the 2016/17 season , Mendy moved to AS Monaco , where he received a five-year contract dated June 30, 2021.

For the 2017/18 season , Mendy moved to Manchester City and signed a contract until 2022. The rumored transfer fee of just under 58 million euros made him the most expensive defender in football history at the time.

National team

Benjamin Mendy has already played in various national youth teams in his country. With France he took part in the 2011 U-17 World Cup and reached the quarter-finals.

On March 16, 2017, coach Didier Deschamps appointed him to the French senior team for the first time. He played his first international match against Luxembourg on March 25, 2017 as part of the World Cup qualification. In 2018 he became world champion.
