Creation and publication

After Night Is the New Day , the Norrman brothers left the band. Per Eriksson and Niklas Sandin were hired at short notice to replace the upcoming concerts, but soon became permanent members of the band. Katatonia toured extensively in 2010 and 2011 until a new album was finally recorded. Frank Default was again involved as keyboard player on Dead End Kings , Silje Wergeland from The Gathering was a guest singer. The album was produced by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse and mixed by David Castillo. Travis Smith was again responsible for the artwork. In addition to the regular CD version, limited LP and DVD-Audio versions as well as a deluxe edition with CD, LP, DVD and book were also released.

style

The album builds on Katatonia's characteristic mix of progressive rock , gothic rock and dark metal from Night Is the New Day and refines it further. The pieces are mostly melancholic and a bit quieter overall, but they still use the typical heavy riffs and guitar walls every now and then . Sound surfaces and electronic effects are also used again.

reception

The album was largely positively received by the press. Sebastian Hauck from Babyblauen Seiten complains, however, "that you somehow already know all of this, [...] structures, harmonies, riffs, even entire passages seem familiar, almost as if the band were copying themselves". Oliver Paßgang from powermetal.de also thinks , "It should have been more variety, especially compared to his own discography." Anton Kostudis from metal.de praises the album's "rousing atmosphere and emotionality". BBC Music's Raziq Rauf describes Dead End Kings as "another excellent album" full of "moments of impressive, majestic beauty". In German Metal Hammer it was album of the month September 2012.
