Katatonia is a Founded in 1991, Metal - band from Sweden .

Initially, the group played a as dark metal labeled mixture of Doom Metal with Black- and Death Metal -Einflüssen, the newer albums are as dark metal or progressive rock called. The name of the band is derived from the disease catatonia .

history

Jonas "Lord Seth" Renkse and Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström founded the band around 1987 or 1988, made a few test recordings and disbanded the band because of problems with the line-up. In 1991, Renkse and Nyström re-founded Katatonia, which the band regards as the actual year they were founded and which they now indicate as such. At the beginning of July 1992 Katatonia went to Dan Swanös Gorysound Studio and played the demo recording Jhva Elohim Meth (Hebrew יהוה אלוהים מת 'God is dead'). This was re-released by Vic Records as a mini-CD entitled Jhva Elohim Meth… The Revival . At the beginning of December 1992 the bassist Israphel became a member of the band and new songs were composed for the debut album Dance of December Souls ; In late 1992, the band signed an album contract with No Fashion Records , where the debut album, recorded in the spring of 1993 at Gorysound Studio, was released in December 1993.

In early 1994 the band recorded the ten minute long Scarlet Heavens , which was released in 1996 via Misanthropy Records as a limited Split 10 ”with Primordial . In the spring of 1994 the record company Wrong Again Records offered Katatonia to contribute to a planned sampler, and the band received an offer for a new recording contract from Avantgarde Music . In 1995 the tracks Black Erotica and Love of the Swan appeared on the WAR Compilation sampler and the EP For Funerals to Come on avant-garde music. A few months after the EP was released, Katatonia's activities were temporarily suspended. During this break, Renkse devoted himself to his new side project October Tide , while Nyström was active with Diabolical Masquerade and Bewitched . Nevertheless, he continued to work for Katatonia in the form of interviews; "My reason for doing this was simply that I didn't want the band to fade away or even worse, to be abandoned as a band that had their good days already." For Renkse is a second Katatonia album with the working title Where Hearses Go ... wore, never been a closed chapter or a myth; it was to be recorded the following summer and released as a soundtrack for the coming fall. In early 1996 the band was reunited. With the former October Tide guitarist Fred Norrman, the band now had a permanent third member. With this line-up, the band went again to Swanö's studio, which has since been renamed Unisound, but “only with ideas and a confused vision”, but without any previously written songs. After two weeks the new album was finished, it was now called Brave Murder Day . Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth took care of the singing . After a European tour in the fall of 1996, the band went to the Sunlight Studio in early 1997 because Swano's studio had been closed. There the EP Sounds of Decay was recorded, which was produced by the band and mixed by Tomas Skogsberg . Åkerfeldt took over the vocals here too.

In mid-1997 Nyström, Renkse, Norrman and the new bassist Mikael Oretoft entered the Sunlight Studio again to record the next album, Discouraged Ones . Here Renkse took over the vocals in addition to the drums. In 1999 the record company Peaceville Records offered Katatonia a five-album contract, and the band toured Scandinavia with Paradise Lost . The line-up has now stabilized with Mattias Norrman on bass and Daniel Liljekvist on drums. After the sixth studio album Viva Emptiness , which was released in 2003 , the band released two compilations in 2005: Brave Yester Days , published via Avantgarde Music, shows the early phase of Katatonia (1991–1996), and the 2-CD and 1-DVD released on Peaceville Records Box The Black Sessions contains a best of the band from 1998 to 2003. In 2006 their seventh studio album The Great Cold Distance followed . This was followed by the single Deliberation and a European tour with November and an American tour with Moonspell . Music videos were released for the singles Deliberation and July . A tribute album was released towards the end of 2006. On it are songs of the band that have been covered by other bands. This CD is called December Songs - A Tribute to Katatonia . A 5.1 surround sound mix version of the album The Great Cold Distance was also released .

On May 28, 2007 the live DVD / CD Live Consternation was released . This contains a recording of the Summer Breeze concert that took place on August 17th, 2006 in Germany. In July 2009, the eighth studio album, Night Is the New Day , was recorded, with the drums recorded in Studio Mega and the majority of the recordings took place in the Ghost Ward Studios; It was mastered at Fascination Street Studios . On December 22nd, 2009 the band announced the departure of Fredrik "North" Norrman and Mattias "Kryptan" Norrman. Both left the band without a fight and for family reasons. For the announced concerts, guitarist Per “Sodomizer” Eriksson from Bloodbath and bassist Niklas “Nille” Sandin were hired as short-term replacements. As permanent band members, they were also involved in the following album Dead End Kings and its semi-acoustic version Dethroned & Uncrowned . In February 2014, however, Eriksson's exit was announced. Bruce Soord ( The Pineapple Thief ) will step in for him on the Unplugged Tour in spring 2014, and Tomas Åkvik at the summer festivals. In April 2014, drummer Daniel Liljekvist announced that he would be leaving the band for family reasons. He was replaced at the "Dethroned & Uncrowned - Unplugged & Reworked" concerts by JP Asplund and at the summer festivals by Daniel Moilanen.

Music style and lyrics

Around 1987/88 Lord Seth and Blakkheim composed material in the style of Bathory's Under the Sign of the Black Mark . In the phase from 1991 they were inspired by bands such as Bathory, Fields of the Nephilim , Depeche Mode and the early works of Paradise Lost and The Cure . Early pictures show the band with corpsepaint , and their original lettering included an upside-down pentagram ; the musicians were not satanists , however, and did not associate themselves with black metal ; Lord Seth declared that he believed in the night and that it was enough for him to know who he was. They were anti-Christian, however, and Blakkheim also referred to the Vikings. Lord Seth accordingly declared that Katatonias music was black, but not black metal, and called it "Gothic Funeral Metal". The whole concept of the band is based on the element of grief. According to Renkse, the band has “become a philosophy, at least for us [...]. It is dark and personal music and lyrics, regardless of our environment. "In A 1000 Years .. ... of lost pride and dignity , the guitars were propagation delay as a very atmospheric described, coupled with" weeping Keyboards, solid bass, slow drums "And a" brighter, more emotional vocals than the usual death grunts ". The debut album Dance of December Souls was also advertised as "Dark Metal". It was described in A 1000 Years .. ... of lost pride and dignity as "slow, pleasing, mostly melodic and [...] dark".

On the EP For Funerals to Come , the band processed strong influences from Heavy Metal , the vocals were based on Nordic Black Metal. On Brave Murder Day , the band moved away from black metal influences; the music was now far more minimalistic and created a hypnotizing effect through repetitive, monotonous riffs . The growl vocals for the album were taken on by Opeth singer Mikael Åkerfeldt , who can also be heard on the following mini EP Sounds of Decay , while the former lead singer Jonas Renkse was only responsible for the rather sparsely used clear vocals. That's because he says he has lost the ability to "make real Death Metal screams". Frank Stöver even wrote that this was not even a metal album anymore, because the music was more like the Gothic Rock of bands like Fields of the Nephilim ; it was "a good Gothic release, but a weak Katatonia comeback".

On Discouraged Ones , the band moved away from their doom metal origins and took on numerous foreign influences from Gothic rock and dark folk , among others , and the lyrics dealt with feelings of loss, desolation, despair and hope. Renkse only sang clearly on the album. The album thus laid the foundation for the stylistic direction of the other albums. The band continued to develop from album to album, from the initial Doom Metal with black metal influences over time became progressive Doom Rock , which is increasingly referred to as Dark Metal . Influences like anathema cannot be ignored.
