The Record Store Day (short: RSD) is the international day of independent record stores and will take place in 2008.

history

The origins of the RSD lie in the United States, where record store owners and employees such as Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner organized the first event. There are now over 700 US shops participating, and around 2000 specialist dealers worldwide. According to the coordinators, there are around 180 record stores in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Large chains and online retailers are excluded from the event.

The concept behind the RSD is that buyers come to appreciate the advice and atmosphere of the specialist dealers more. The focus is on vinyl , which has regained popularity in recent years. In order to strengthen this trend and to save the independent shops from extinction, exclusive records are released every year, which are often strictly limited and can therefore only be purchased on that day from the registered shops. These can be new publications as well as re-publications (so-called reissues). Records that are not sold end up in stores.

In recent years the RSD, which is considered to be the world's largest music event, has been supported by artists such as Ozzy Osbourne , Metallica , Iggy Pop and Jack White .

2020 was the date that was originally scheduled for April 18, due to the SARS-CoV-2 - pandemic in Germany , Austria and Switzerland postponed to 20 June 2020th
