Jack White (* 9. July 1975 in Detroit , Michigan as John Anthony Gillis ) is a songwriter , singer and guitarist of the band The Raconteurs and drummer for The Dead Weather . From 1997 to 2011 he was the head of the garage rock band The White Stripes . In the list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by the music magazine Rolling Stone, he ranks 70th.

biography

Jack White grew up in a large Catholic family with nine siblings. At the age of eleven he started playing drums, and when he was fifteen he started playing guitar. In 1992 he studied music at the Cass Technical High School and also trained in an upholstery company. At that time, Jack White was opening his own upholstery shop, Third Man Upholstery. The color scheme was, similar to his current label Third Man Records , yellow and black. The advertising slogan was "Your furniture is not dead," and while business was not bad, Jack White was not enjoying being an upholsterer; so he wrote poems on the inside of the furniture. White made his first professional appearance as a drummer in the band Goober & the Peas .

The first band White played as a guitarist was Two Part Resin . After Dominic Suchyta left the three-man band, only Jack and his colleague Brian Muldoon remained. From late 1993 to 1996, the two played only guitar and drums as a duo. When Brian lost interest in the band, White came up with the idea of putting his supposed sister Meg on the drums. Although she had no experience, the two decided to continue as The White Stripes . White also played in the bands 2 Star Tabernacle and The Go , but soon gave up in favor of the White Stripes. Nevertheless, Jack recorded the album Makers of High Grade Suites around 2000 together with Brian Muldoon under the name The Upholsterers (dt. Die Polsterer) . But this band didn't last long either.

According to the Detroit Free Press , Jack and Megan (real: Megan Martha White) are not siblings: According to the newspaper, the two were married on September 21, 1996 in Oakland County and the marriage was notarized five days later . Jack took the surname of Megan White. The marriage was divorced in March 2000. Incidentally, neither of them provide any information about the origin of their relationship.

Jack White also worked as a producer for the band Soledad Brothers and The Von Bondies . In 2005/06 he founded the band The Raconteurs with three friends ( Brendan Benson , Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler) , in which he sings and plays guitar. On January 30th, 2006 they released the limited 7 "vinyl single Steady, as She Goes with two songs, on May 12th 2006 their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers followed .

He was in a relationship with the actress Renée Zellweger , whom he met while filming their joint film On the Road to Cold Mountain . The couple had planned the wedding for Christmas 2004, but separated shortly before.

On June 1, 2005, Jack married Karen Elson , the red-haired model also featured in the music video for Blue Orchid from the album Get Behind Me Satan . On the same day he played with the White Stripes as the first rock band in a concert at the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus. Jack and Karen have had a daughter since May 2, 2006 and a son since August 7, 2007. In 2010 Jack White produced their first album, The Ghost Who Walks , for his wife , a collection of songs in gothic folk style. On June 10, 2011, the two announced their separation.

In 2006 he appeared as a guest at the Rolling Stones concert at New York's Beacon Theater . This concert was released in German cinemas on April 4, 2008 as the film Shine a Light . In 2008 Jack White recorded the theme song for the 22nd James Bond film Quantum of Solace with the US singer Alicia Keys . Another Way to Die was released on September 19, 2008.

Also in 2008 was the documentary / Rockumentary It Might Get Loud , which is dedicated to the history of the electric guitar and portrays White "on par with the world guitarists" Jimmy Page from ( Led Zeppelin ) and The Edge from ( U2 ). The film was shown in German cinemas from August 27, 2009. Since the beginning of 2009, White has also played in the alternative rock band The Dead Weather .

On February 2, 2011, whitestripes.com announced that the duo had decided to part ways. White explained that the separation was not due to health reasons or artistic differences, but that there were "a variety of reasons".

Jack White has been a solo musician since the beginning of 2012. On February 27th, he released his first single Love Interruption . His first solo album, Blunderbuss , was released on April 23, 2012 and is available as a 12 "vinyl record and CD.

From May 2012 Jack White made a worldwide tour that also took him to Germany.

On June 6, 2014, Jack White released his second solo album called Lazaretto .

White released his third solo album "Boarding House Reach" (CD, vinyl record, digital) on March 23, 2018. As part of a world tour, he also came to Germany for three concerts in 2018 (Berlin, Munich, Dortmund).

Third Man Records

In 2001 Jack White founded the record label Third Man Records in Detroit . Since 2009 the label has had a recording studio, office space, a record store and a venue with a recording booth and a photo studio in Nashville .

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of his label, White had a vinyl record played in the stratosphere in July 2016 . A special construction consisting of a balloon, record player and parachute ( Icarus Craft ) rose to a height of around 29 kilometers (94.413 ft). The piece of music was A Glorious Dawn , a sampling with Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking , which was released as a single in 2009 as part of the music project Symphony of Science by John D. Boswell.
