Blunderbuss is Jack White's first solo album , which was released on April 23, 2012 under White's own label Third Man Records in collaboration with XL REcordings and Columbia Records . The album was released on MP3, CD and vinyl. In 2011 White composed, recorded and produced all of the pieces on the album. The album debuted at number 1 on Billboard 200 and sold 138,000 copies in its first week.

Creation and publication

After the White Stripes broke up , White began recording a solo album in the studio in the second half of 2011. White played a large part of the instruments himself, but invited various guest musicians with whom the pieces were created. With Love Interruption , Sixteen Saltines and Freedom at 21 , three singles were released in advance before the album was released on April 20, 2012. On April 16, Third Man Records made the album available on iTunes for free listening, but the album could not be downloaded.

review

Jakob Biazza heard the album for Focus and judged: “It sounds like the Stones sound, they still wrote uncompromisingly driven music: raw, except for the essential (sometimes almost the existential), the muscular skeleton emaciated, but still in exactly the right Moments of sublime force and bloodcurdling urge. [...] There is hardly any frills. When an instrument kicks in, it has absolute space, absolute meaning. Whether it's sensitive pedal steel on the title track or on the only cover, Rudolph Toomb's “I'm Shakin '”, one of White's inimitable croaking distortion riffs: What made it onto the album needed it too. If it were missing: it would be missing. It's big cinema in a small hall. "

Edo Reents of the FAZ wrote: ““ Blunderbuss ”is only partially a big record. All too clearly you can hear the will to breathe life into rock'n'roll again and break it down into its components. Jack White does this with such determination that at first you don't know what to say and admire more: the virtuosity with which he serves every sub-genre - whether country, blues or heavy metal - and which is more than mere mere Dexterity; or the fact that he does something like that to pass the time? "

Michael Schuh from laut.de awards four out of five stars. He especially praised Jack White's creativity and said the album sounds like a folky cover album of White Stripes songs.
