Specter is a British thriller agent . It is the 24th film in the James Bond film series and the fourth film with Daniel Craig in the title role. The film builds on the previous film Skyfall  (2012) and continues the plot of Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace  (2008). It celebrated its world premiere on October 26, 2015 in London and launched in Germany and Switzerland on November 5 and in Austria on November 6, 2015.

action

On the Day of the Dead , British secret agent Bond is in Mexico City and kills two men planning to blow up a packed stadium. He received the order for this from his former boss M one day after her death in the form of a video message in which she asked him to find a man named Sciarra, to kill him and not to miss his funeral. The building with the two assassins and their client Sciarra collapses, but Bond escapes on board a helicopter, pursued by Bond. Bond throws Sciarra and the pilot out of the helicopter in the ensuing scuffle, but can first take Sciarra's ring, on which an octopus is engraved, to himself.

Back in London, Bond is suspended by the new M, who is in the middle of an argument with C, the head of the Joint Intelligence Service. This is out to merge the British domestic secret service MI5 and the British foreign secret service MI6 . C declares the conventional secret services obsolete and wants to discontinue the double-zero program in order to create the nine-eye system instead , a secret service cooperation between nine countries for global, complete surveillance.

Bond defies M's order to ignore his predecessor's order and travels to Rome for Sciarra's funeral. In the evening he visits Sciarra's widow Lucia and saves her from the killers of a criminal organization to which her husband belonged. She tells him where the organization will meet that evening. He makes sure that a secret service will take care of the widow and goes to the organization's meeting. There he can gain access by showing the octopus ring and initially attend the meeting unmolested. The numerous members of the mysterious organization report on their criminal activities around the world, and its leader also addresses the events in Mexico City. Finally, he turns directly to Bond and reveals that he knows him from the past. Bond recognizes him as a man believed dead by the name of Franz Oberhauser, has to flee and is pursued by Mr. Hinx, a killer of the organization, while chasing a car through Rome. Bond escapes and lets Moneypenny research the name “Pale King” he picked up, as well as Franz Oberhauser.

Moneypenny finds out that the clues lead to Mr. White, a former member of Quantum whose trail is lost in Altaussee , Austria. Bond finds Mr. White there in a remote cabin by the lake. The latter explains that he will die in the near future as a result of thallium poisoning, for which Oberhauser is responsible, to whom White recently refused to obey. Bond can convince White to reveal the whereabouts of his daughter Madeleine Swann, who is supposed to lead him to a certain L'Américain and from there to the secret organization. In return, White demands that the agent protect his daughter and shoots himself.

Bond finds Swann in a mountain clinic where she works as a psychologist, but she is kidnapped by Mr. Hinx. Bond follows the kidnappers in an airplane, entangling the kidnappers' three cars in an accident before escaping with Swann. They meet up with Q, the MI6 quartermaster and computer specialist, who discovers that Sciarra's ring contains digital information about Bond's previous missions. Swann reveals to Q and Bond that the organization is called Specter and that L'Américain is a hotel in Morocco .

Bond and Swann travel to Tangier and rent the suite at L'Américain , which Mr. White has stayed in every year since his wedding. There, Bond discovers a secret room, where they get a clue to an unknown location in the middle of the desert. They travel there by train, while M in London instructs Q to discontinue the digital monitoring of Bonds and to cover up its trail so that it can operate undetected by C. In the dining car , Bond is attacked again by Mr. Hinx, but finally manages to throw him off the train.

They are expected at a remote train station in the desert and taken to a meteorite crater . This is where one of the headquarters of Specter 's globally distributed information network is located . Here you meet Oberhauser again. He reveals that Quantum was part of the parent terrorist organization Specter all along and that Specter is responsible for the deaths of Vesper Lynd and M , as Le Chiffre , Dominic Greene and Raoul Silva were members of Specter . The global terrorist attacks should underscore the need for the nine-eye system . C is only Oberhauser's puppet and is supposed to set up the system for him, with which Specter would then be able to record global political and economic events and to influence them in his favor. Oberhauser tortures Bond and gives an insight into his and Bond's past: He is the biological son of Bond's foster father , who raised him after he lost his parents as a child. He admits that out of jealousy he had courted fatherly love with Bond and that he now bears the name Ernst Stavro Blofeld ; he changed his name after he killed his father and faked his own death. Bond and Swann escape using an exploding wristwatch and then blow up the facility.

Back in London they meet M, Tanner, Q and Moneypenny. While Swann separates from the group, the others drive to C to arrest him and stop the nine-eye system , which is due to go online shortly and would then no longer be vulnerable. They are ambushed along the way and Bond is kidnapped. M and the others escape and intercept C in his office. In the scuffle with M, C crashes and dies, while Q manages to crack access to the nine-eye system and deactivate it. Bond is meanwhile taken to the former MI6 building, which has been abandoned since Silva's terrorist attack . He switches off his kidnappers and shortly afterwards meets Blofeld, who survived the explosion in the desert and informs him that Swann is somewhere in the building and that it will blow up in three minutes. Bond finally finds her and can flee with her in a boat just in time before the building behind them explodes. On the Thames , they follow Blofeld, who makes off in a helicopter. Bond shoots down the helicopter; this falls on the Westminster Bridge , and Blofeld dragged injured from the wreck. Instead of liquidating Blofeld, Bond, after a moment's hesitation, leaves him to M, who arrests him.

Some time later, Bond visits Q in his laboratory to pick up the Aston Martin DB5 , which was almost completely destroyed in the fight with Silva and was restored by Q. Bond starts the car and drives off with Madeleine Swann.

background

Specter is the abbreviation for the opposing terrorist organization Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion . This previously appeared in the films between 007 Dr. No from 1962 and Diamond Fever from 1971 on. The rights to the name "Specter", the organization and the associated characters had been the subject of years of litigation. Since the organization first appeared in the James Bond book Aktion Feuerball , it held the copyright on that book. Co-author Kevin McClory had the film rights for this in 1963, while Ian Fleming received the book rights. For the film series, the production company had licensed the characters in the episode of McClory. In November 2013, Danjaq , who holds the remaining film rights, bought the rights to "Specter" from the McClorys family.

In July 2013, the start date of the film and at the same time the director, Sam Mendes, was announced after it was first announced in March of the same year that Sam Mendes would not be directing. During the press conference on December 4, 2014, the title of the film and James Bond's new "company car" were presented: the Aston Martin DB10, which was specially made for the film .

In November 2014, Sony Pictures Entertainment was attacked by hackers who published a number of confidential emails from the company's management about important film projects. This included production notes for the film Specter , which documented that the film had exceeded the budget. At the same time, the documents contained early script versions by screenwriter John Logan . Eon Productions later confirmed the authenticity of the documents.

Filming began on December 8, 2014 and continued through July 5, 2015. The filming locations included London , Rome , Mexico City , Tangier , Oujda and Erfoud in Morocco and the Austrian communities of Sölden , Altaussee , Obertilliach and Kartitsch . The film was also shot on and in Blenheim Palace near Woodstock in Oxfordshire . Some scenes were created at the Ice Q summit restaurant by the architect Johann Obermoser on the Gaislachkogel , where the James Bond adventure world "007 Elements" was opened on July 12, 2018.

The actors in the film were featured on the 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios in December 2014 . Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in his fourth film, and Ralph Fiennes , Naomie Harris and Ben Whishaw reappear as "M", Eve Moneypenny and "Q" in the feature film after they were first introduced in Skyfall . Rory Kinnear takes on the role of Bill Tanner for the third time.

The first trailer was released on March 27, 2015. Atypically it does not contain any fighting sequences. The second trailer for the film was released in July 2015. The film celebrated its world premiere on October 26, 2015 in London and was officially released worldwide on November 6, 2015.

After the well-known pistol barrel sequence was incorporated into the Bond films in a different form from 2006 to 2012 (beginning of the opening credits or in the credits), it can be seen again as usual at the beginning of the opening title sequence, as it was last in the movie Die Another Day .

Soundtrack

Thomas Newman composed the soundtrack again. This time, unlike before, he wrote the film music while filming and not after the film was edited. Sam Smith sings the theme song Writing's on the Wall . The soundtrack was first released on CD at Decca Records in late October 2015 . The title song is only available as a shortened instrumental version.

Sam Smith won the Best Movie Song category at the 2016 Academy Awards.

The film received mixed reviews.

“The film, again directed by Sam Mendes, creates numerous links between the new and the three previous films, which retrospectively makes Casino Royale , Quantum of Solace , Skyfall and Specter look like a unit. The action scenes are powerful and intense, there is again a nasty torture scene like in Casino Royale , and ironic undertones even creep in. [...] Conclusion: The 24th Bond film works as an action hit, but also as a psychodrama and could mark a worthy conclusion to the Daniel Craig era. "

“The overwhelming success of its predecessor 'Skyfall' […] made a budget of 245 million dollars possible - and every cent of this gigantic sum is visible on the screen. In addition to a fireworks display of elaborate action sequences, 'Specter' offers a Daniel Craig in top form, crisp, sharp-tongued dialogues and cynical, fun onliners. The story, however, remains episodic and the arbitrary motivation of the evil opponent stands on feet of clay. Nevertheless, with 'Specter' a narrative circle closes: What started in 'Casino Royale' and continued with 'A Quantum of Solace', which then found an emotional climax in 'Skyfall', is brought to a satisfactory end with 'Specter' . "

“For a good Bond film you [...] don't need an auteur filmmaker, but rather a racing filmmaker. Action seems alien to Mendes, however. A chase through Rome in 'Specter' looks as if the city's monument protection officer had directed it. [...] Instead of carefree pleasure, there is intense seriousness. [...] Almost nothing is allowed to shine in 'Specter', everything should sink into gloom. Some of the scenes, which at times seem almost black and white, are very atmospheric. "

“In terms of narrative, 'Specter' is a bit bumpy. With his staging as strong as in 'Skyfall', Sam Mendes makes up for one or two narrative lapses. [...] But that doesn't change the fact that 'Specter' cannot top either 'Casino Royale' or 'Skyfall'. "

- Filmrezension.de

“The fourth agent film with Daniel Craig in the Bond role [...] closes a kind of 'internal tetralogy'; As a total of the 24th Bond cinema adventure, it also combines nostalgic references to 'classic' elements of the series with brilliant action sequences. For all the entertainment, the attempt to bring such reverence together with the problems and challenges of 'Big Data' plus a touch of family melodrama seems a bit strained. "

Trivia

  • The license plates of Dr. Swann's kidnappers do not correspond to any real Austrian license plates, but are made up of several: The state coat of arms is the coat of arms of Vienna, which is also used on Viennese license plates, but the letters "IL" designate the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land .
  • The Mexican Day of the Dead shown in the film takes place every year from October 31 to November 2, but the death parade of thousands of people in disguise in Mexico City did not take place until then. It was created especially for the film and will remain part of the celebrations in the future, not least for tourist reasons. 250,000 people attended the parade on October 29, 2016.
  • Originally the English band Radiohead had received the contract to contribute the title song. Her song Specter was rejected, among other things because it was too melancholy for the producers. The band later released the song as a free download.
  • Shortly before the end, when Bond enters the MI6 building, which is being prepared to be blown up, he briefly looks at a plaque with the names of killed agents. However, these are not fictional names, but those of the members of the film crew who have immortalized themselves in this way.

publication

The film was released on March 1, 2016 on Blu-ray and DVD . The film was broadcast for the first time on German television on January 17, 2018 on ZDF.
