The Innsbruck-Land district is a political district in the Austrian state of Tyrol .

It surrounds the statutory city of Innsbruck , borders in the west on the Imst district , in the east on the Schwaz district , in the north on Bavaria ( Garmisch-Partenkirchen district ) and in the south on South Tyrol ( district community Wipptal ). The seat of the district administration is in Innsbruck.

The district with an area of 1,989.36 km² is located in a part of the Inn Valley ( Upper Inn Valley and Lower Inn Valley ) and in the North Tyrolean part of the Wipptal and its side valleys ( Stubaital , Sellraintal , Gschnitztal , Wattental ). Furthermore, the area of the Seefeld Plateau belongs to the district.

The southern border with the Brenner Pass is formed by the main Alpine ridge . In addition to the valleys, the district mainly comprises alpine areas ( Stubai Alps in the southwest, Tux Alps in the southeast, Wetterstein Mountains and Karwendel in the north).

The Innsbruck-Land district is the second largest in Tyrol and the fifth largest in Austria after the Lienz district .

Economy and Infrastructure

The district is an important tourist area (Stubai Valley, Seefeld area, Innsbruck area). In the secondary sector, alongside the dominant Swarovski company, the construction industry is represented with a high proportion of employees. Important locations for industry and commerce are Wattens , Völs , Absam , Hall , Kematen and Telfs .

The largest production companies can be found in the fields of manufacture and processing of glass, the food industry, optics and the construction industry.

Most of the residents commute to Innsbruck. That is why many communities in the district are developing into residential suburbs, which means that most residents drive to Innsbruck every day to work and spend a large part of their free time there and only come home to sleep.

Administrative division

The Innsbruck-Land district is divided into 65 communities , including one town and eight market communities. This makes it the district with the largest number of municipalities in Austria. The municipalities are grouped together in eleven, partly cross-district planning associations (listed in the table under Region ).
