history

The origin of the place name is unclear. It is derived either from an Indo-European root nav ('flow, swim', as in Latin navis 'ship') or from the Latin in abisso ( in the gorge ).

Roman coin finds show that the Romans once settled in this area.

The advancing Bavarians used the valley as a pasture, alpine pasture and hunting area, permanent settlement did not take place until the end of the 13th century. The Lower Bavarian Benedictine Monastery of Biburg and the Lords of Auffenstein were a larger manor . Copper and silver were mined in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Blazon : A fallen golden tip in green, inside a black and gold eagle owl.

The municipal coat of arms was awarded in 1975 by the state government. The eagle owl is taken from the coat of arms of the Auffenstein , who owned Auffenstein Castle and were the greatest landlords in the Navistal. The fallen peak symbolizes the valley  formed as a V valley.
