history
The origin of the name of Pfons is unclear. The name comes either from "phanes" or "fanes" (mountain slope) or from "pons" (bridge). “Pfans” was first mentioned in a document around 1030, and around 1140/47 the name “Phanese” appeared. The district Schöfens ("Schevens") was first mentioned in a document in 1315.
Pfons has been an independent municipality since 1811. A parish amalgamation with Matrei and Mühlbachl was rejected on the occasion of a referendum in 1974.
In the municipality above the village, the Matreier marble (Matreier serpentine ) used to be mined, which was used as a decorative stone in many churches in Tyrol, but also in the design of the Burgtheater and the Natural History Museum in Vienna .
