history
The old town is part of the oldest settlement in the Wipptal, which dates back to pre-Roman times and was called Matreium by the Romans . The settlement consists of two parts, the so-called “market” with a double row of houses on Brennerstrasse (today's Matrei), a single row of houses on Ellbögener Strasse in today's Mühlbachl on the left bank of the Sill and the so-called “old town” on the right bank. While the market had belonged to the bishops of Brixen as Hofmark since 1239 , the old town belonged to the truce of Castle Matrei . The old town is probably the older settlement. Your name has nothing to do with "city", but was originally Altenstatt ("old home"). The parish church of the Assumption of Mary located here, first mentioned in 1311, was the seat of the original parish of Matrei.
Infrastructure
The place has a central function for the three communities Matrei, Mühlbachl and Pfons. The elementary school Matrei and the surrounding area is located here. The parish church with the cemetery built into the slope, the late Gothic St. John's Chapel and the Gothic Widum represents a closed artistic and urban ensemble.
