Rum is a market town (since 1987) in the Innsbruck-Land district of the state of Tyrol in Austria at 622  m above sea level. A. with 9271 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) on 8.55 km² municipality area. It is located on the southern slope of the Nordkette on the village road to Hall in Tirol and borders Innsbruck to the west . Rum is one of the MARTHA villages and is located in the judicial district of Hall in Tyrol .

The municipality of Rum is located northeast of Innsbruck. The neighboring communities of Thaur and Hall in Tirol are in the immediate vicinity . Further east are Absam and Mils , in the south the municipality is Ampass located. In the north there is a forest area of ​​rum.

Due to its proximity to the provincial capital Innsbruck, rum was subject to great pressure from settlement in the period after the Second World War. The town center with the Gothic parish church is located on a slope, on a flood cone of a mud. The district of Neu-Rum is located south of the main road to Hall with a residential area built from the 1970s, which borders directly to the west of Innsbruck's Olympic Village , and an extensive industrial and commercial area (trading companies). This makes rum one of the richest communities in Tyrol. The district of Hoch-Rum lies above the old town center and has a private clinic in addition to a residential area that was expanded from 1955 onwards.

The municipality consists of a single cadastral municipality or town of the same name . Districts are: Canisiusbrünnl (Rotte), Garneid (scattered houses) and Neu-Rum (village). Neu-Rum is now the largest district with 5522 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2015).

history

The origin of the place name of Rum (or the earlier Rumne and the alternative Rumb ) has not been conclusively clarified. A connection with the mudslide catchment area in which rum is located is considered possible. A plausible explanation would be the Indo-European word reup , which stands for tearing or breaking off , i.e. in the broadest sense for raging, wildly flowing water. Further solutions are suspected in the Rhaetian and Etruscan languages .

The first signs of settlement in the area around Rum can be found in early antiquity; so the terrace-like layout of the arable farming areas at that time is assumed to date back to pre-Roman times. A first documentary mention as "Rumne" is from 1152 to 1158 in the form of a traditional note from the Polling monastery . In 1313 the place was named as an independent village. In 1337 there was talk of a small church for the first time. Between 1460 and 1480 a new Gothic church was built in Rum .

In 1611/12 a plague epidemic raged in the Innsbruck region , but this did not significantly increase the number of deaths. A large debris flow is known from 1729 , as well as from the years 1769, 1770, 1788, 1875, 1894 and 1905. In 1765 the village church was redesigned in Baroque style , and in 1775 the first lessons were given in Rum. This first took place in the houses of the farmers, a school house was only built in 1818. In 1826 Rum received its own pastor; between 1862 and 1865 the church was restored and expanded again.

As a result of the First World War , 23 Rumer died, and times of emergency broke out in the place. A dowser suspected a coal deposit below the municipal area around 1920. However, one borehole did not unearth any coal, but the up to twenty meters high water fountain from an artesian spring , which had to be closed again under difficult circumstances.

In the Second World War, 91 men lost their lives. In 1938 a military camp was built at the west end of Rum, which came into US hands in May 1945 and was used by the French occupation as a prisoner of war camp from August . The warehouse, used again by the Americans between 1953 and 1955, came into Austrian possession in September 1955.

In 1940 Rum received a parish vicariate and in 1948 it became its own parish . In 1966 and 1967 the church was brought back into a baroque style.

During this time, construction began so far because of the risk of mudslides in uninhabited land. The proximity to Innsbruck fueled the already large population growth, so that a completely new district, namely Neu-Rum, was created, for which a new infrastructural system also had to be developed. In 1976 its own parish was established there, which in 1988 became the seat of a newly founded local parish. In 1987 rum received the status of a market town.

Population development

The greatest increases in the number of inhabitants are related to the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and 1976. The Olympic Village was built or expanded on these occasions .

The local area of ​​Rum merges seamlessly into Innsbruck's urban area, is also supplied by the Innsbruck municipal and transport companies and has therefore long been a functional district of Innsbruck. However, efforts to incorporate them have so far been unsuccessful.
