1917 is a war film directed by Sam Mendes , which was released in US theaters in December 2019 and in European theaters in January 2020. The film follows two soldiers from the British Army who, as reporters on the Western Front , are supposed to bring an urgent order to the front line in 1917 . The film is a one-cut film , which means that it is shot and edited in such a way that the action takes place in real time , even if it is not a one-shot film.

At the 2020 Academy Awards , the film won awards for best camera , sound, and visual effects . He also received seven other nominations, including Best Picture , Mendes for Best Director and, together with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, for Best Original Screenplay .

action

The action takes place in the spring of 1917 during the First World War in the British sector of the Western Front in northern France . Two British soldiers , Lance Corporals Will Schofield and Tom Blake, are ordered to deliver an urgent message to Colonel Mackenzie. He is about to undertake an attack with the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment on the Germans, who, to his knowledge, are on a disorderly retreat. In the meantime, the British Army Command has learned through aerial reconnaissance that this retreat was a ruse ( company Alberich ). In truth, the German Army goes back to the Siegfried Line and awaits the British attack there in well-developed positions.

The attack by Mackenzie's battalion is doomed to failure; only a few of the 1,600 men would probably survive. Blake's brother Joseph is serving as a lieutenant in the battalion, so Tom is extremely motivated to give the order to break off the attack in good time.

When they reach the German trenches , they find that the enemy has indeed withdrawn. In an underground dormitory they are crossing, the Germans have left a booby trap that is set off by a rat. In the explosion, parts of the fortification collapse, Schofield is buried, but can be saved by his comrade.

On the way through the hinterland deserted by the Germans, they reach a deserted farm, where they watch the aerial battle between two British and one German aircraft. The German plane is shot down and immediately crashes into a stable building in the yard. Blake and Schofield rescue the enemy pilot from the burning wreck. While Schofield fetches water for him, the aviator attacks Blake with a knife. Schofield kills him with a rescue shot, but can no longer help his comrade. Blake bleeds to death in his arms, with Schofield promising to complete the mission by himself and save Blake's brother from the trap of the Germans.

After being taken away in a crew truck by an advancing British company, he continues alone on a bridge that is impassable for vehicles. He is targeted by a German sniper and shot at. He manages to find the shooter in his hiding place and kill him. He falls off a staircase and remains unconscious for several hours. At night he has to cross the destroyed town of Écoust , where German soldiers are still staying. On the run from a guard, he hides in a cellar, where he meets a young French woman who is looking after an infant. He gives the woman his last provisions and receives directions from her to the grove where he wants to reach Colonel Mackenzie's troops. He escapes the village early in the morning, but falls into a raging river and is carried for miles into the forest, where he meets Mackenzie's rearguard completely drenched.

The battalion is about to launch the first wave of the planned attack, which Schofield can no longer prevent. In the chaos of the assault, he runs partly without cover through no man's land and finally reaches Mackenzie's dugout. After an initial rejection, he can get the Colonel to read the order he has brought. Mackenzie then decides to abandon the attack.

Schofield then learns that Blake's brother was in the first wave of the attack and looks for him at the first aid station among the wounded. Eventually he finds Lieutenant Joseph Blake unharmed there and can inform him of his brother's death and hand over his personal belongings.

production

Staff and cast

“My grandfather told me a lot of stories from the First World War. He was seventeen years old then. The film is an enlargement of one of those stories he told me. Much in it did not happen to him personally. And the two characters, Schofield and Blake, are not modeled on my grandfather. "

- Director Sam Mendes

The film was directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes , who also wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns . It is Mendes' first work as a screenwriter and the second collaboration with Wilson-Cairns, who already wrote the screenplay for The Voyeur's Motel . After Jarhead, this is Mendes's second war film. Steven Spielberg and his company Amblin Partners acted as the producer . Mendes is also producing the film with Pippa Harris , Jayne-Ann Tenggren and Callum McDougall .

The film is dedicated to Sam Mendes' grandfather, Alfred H. Mendes, a World War I veteran who served as a Lance Corporal. He had told him many stories about his experiences as a report runner between 1916 and 1918. He was seventeen at the time, later became a writer and wrote four or five books and an autobiography in which he wrote down all of his personal war stories. The film is trying in some way to pay tribute to the victims of this lost generation, said Mendes at a screening of the film in New York. He added to the film a quote from Erich Maria Remarque's novel In the West Nothing New , which wants to make the horror of this brutal war clear, in which it says: "We have so much to say and we will never say it."

The cast of Benedict Cumberbatch , Andrew Scott and a number of other actors had been known since the end of March 2019 . George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman took on the roles of the two soldiers. Also starring are Richard Madden , Mark Strong , Daniel Mays , Adrian Scarborough , Jamie Parker , Nabhaan Rizwan , Claire Duburcq and Colin Firth to see. MacKay and Chapman in the roles of Lance Corporal William Schofield and Lance Corporal Tom Blake are young actors who are not well-known stars, according to Mendes. One thing to which he had placed more value in 1917 than in his other films was the request to the actors to really live the story instead of "play" it. The two main actors also became more and more familiar with the characters they played during the filming. He told them to only wear their uniforms and rifles every day so that it became second nature.

Shooting and film construction

The film was shot at the Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow

Filming began in early April 2019 and took place in England (including Salisbury Plain and Low Force ) and Scotland. There they shot at the Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow . Roger Deakins acted as cameraman .

The director wanted the plot to take place in real time and to run for 110 minutes. Therefore, the film was shot in such a way that it looks like a continuous shot , interrupted only by the main character Schofield being unconscious for several hours. Unlike Victoria , the two parts were not actually filmed non-stop. Instead, several scenes at different locations were played through in countless test runs until they could be recorded precisely choreographed and then linked together seamlessly.

As Deakins explained, the decision was made to shoot most of the film under a blanket of clouds in order to maintain visual continuity and not spoil the impression of an uninterrupted shot. In sunny weather it was therefore necessary to wait for clouds to come up again before turning again. During filming, you worked with two scripts , one with the dialogues and plot points and one with the camera movements. The choice to stage the whole thing as a kind of single continuous take was due to the consideration of involving the audience as much as possible in the real events of the journey that the characters have to make, according to Mendes.

Rüdiger Suchsland from the film service explains that even if there are no recognizable cuts, the principle of a single camera setting is not completely maintained, as shown by some “predetermined breaking points” such as explosions, pans and black screens. In addition, Mendes breaks the naturalism of chronology, which was very consistent in the first half of the film, several times in the second part by turning night into bright day in seconds, or when an obviously kilometer-long journey is covered in minutes. Sometimes 1917 is dramaturgically similar to a computer game . In other places the film opens up in expressive, emphatically artificial scenes towards the poetic. As a feature film about the First World War, this film is a solitaire; his attitude to war is equally far removed from the familiar patterns: “Not a steel storm , not the transfiguration of war to increase inner experience, but also nothing new in the West - pacifism can be found here. Mendes shows the horror of war , shows disgusting experiences like reaching into the open wound of a dead person, animals nibbling on corpses. ”With his filming concept and the illusion of a single shot, Mendes wanted to make the audience feel instantly present and apparently follows the two young men through a vast panorama of the theater of war at every turn.

Film music and sound

The score was composed by Thomas Newman . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 19 pieces of music, was released by Sony Classical on December 20, 2019. The album debuted at number 13 on the UK's Soundtrack Albums Chart Top 50 on January 17, 2020. Thomas Newman was recognized by the Association of International Film Music Critics (IFMCA) for his work in the category Best Music for an Action or Adventure Film / Thriller .

The four-time Oscar winner Scott Millan was responsible for the sound mixing, who most recently received it for his work on The Bourne Ultimatum .

reception

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany and Switzerland in 1917 the FSK approved for children aged 12 and over. The statement of reasons for the release says that the haunting staging draws the viewer into the action and lets him experience various threatening and violent situations with the realistically drawn protagonists , whereby the violence is never played down or even glorified. The gloomy mood and some dramatic, even brutal scenes could emotionally overwhelm and frighten children under the age of 12.

Reviews and grossing results

The film won over 89 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.37 out of a possible 10 points.

Michael Ranze from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that Sam Mendes has perfected the one-shot setting, and because the characters are constantly in motion, the landscape appears like an endless background, which does not leave the eye calm. The perfectly designed furnishings, from the long trenches to the underground living quarters of the Germans, from the devastated battlefield to the lonely, bare tree that is reminiscent of films by Tarkowski or Angelopoulos , would also have played a decisive role in these images .

Anke Sterneborg from epd Film writes that with unobtrusive elegance and breathtaking ease the view glides, rushes and flies sometimes very close in front of or behind the soldiers, sometimes far away from them over the vastness of the landscape, sometimes tense slowly, sometimes rushed through the scenery . Without the trust that has grown between cameraman Roger Deakins and Mendes in many joint films, this completely weightless and at the same time completely unpretentious virtuosity of camera work would be inconceivable, according to Sterneborg. Together with the convincing young actors Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay , the film enables a very modern look at this war, which has ended for a hundred years.

Martin Schwickert rated the film as “very good” in the Rheinische Post and said of the director: “In George MacKay he has found a wonderful leading actor who goes through the hell of war with great credibility and who ages by years during the two hours of cinema seems. "1917" can already be regarded as a milestone in film history because it develops a clear concept with great technical precision into a moving viewing experience. "

Regarding Mendes' decision to tell his story as a "one-shot movie" and in the subjective perspective of the two main characters, Rüdiger Suchsland remarks that this makes the plot extremely exciting, which is characterized by new surprises and twists that keep coming out of nowhere . Similar to films like Das Boot or Der Schmale Grat , the war here becomes an aesthetic experience in which the physical, loose, unconnected impressions and sensual certainties are at the center and not “the big picture”, not morals and questions of meaning, according to Suchsland. At the same time, however, the formal process has paradoxical consequences for the internal involvement of the viewer: "An equally fundamental distance is mingled with the direct sensuality." The film critic sums up that 1917 was far more than a respectful achievement of astonishing technical athleticism, but a human film, which tells differentiated of immediate humanity.

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 374.7 million with a budget of $ 95 million, of which it grossed $ 159.2 million in North America alone. In Germany, the film recorded 978,106 visitors, which made it number 5 in the 2020 annual charts .
