Dennis Gassner

Dennis Gassner (born October 22, 1948 in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada ) is a Canadian film architect who not only won an Oscar for best production design but also several other film awards .

Life

Gassner began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1979 at Apocalypse Now and has been involved in the production of over thirty films to this day.

At the Academy Awards in 1992 , he and Nancy Haigh won the Oscar for best production design for the gangster film Bugsy (1991) by Barry Levinson with Warren Beatty , Annette Bening and Harvey Keitel in the lead roles . At the same time he was nominated at this Academy Awards with Nancy Haigh in this Oscar category for the production design in Barton Fink (1991) by Ethan and Joel Coen with John Turturro , John Goodman and Judy Davis .

In 1994 Dennis Gassner won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA Award) for Best Production Design in Hudsucker - The Big Leap (1994) by the Coen Brothers with Tim Robbins , Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman .

In 1999 he won his first British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Film Award) for The Truman Show (1998) by Peter Weir with Jim Carrey , Laura Linney and Noah Emmerich . In 1999 he also won the Golden Satellite Award for the best production design for the staging of this film .

This was followed in 2001 by a nomination for the BAFTA Film Award for best production design in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? - A Mississippi Odyssey (2000) by Ethan and Joel Coen, starring George Clooney , John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson .

In 2002 Gassner was nominated with Chris Gorak and Lance Hammer for the first time for the Excellence in Production Design Award of the Art Directors Guild (ADG) for The Man Who Wasn't There by Joel Coen with Billy Bob Thornton , Frances McDormand and Michael Badalucco in the leading roles. He was also nominated for the Phoenix Film Critics Society (PFCS Award) for best production design.

He and Nancy Haigh received another Oscar nomination for Best Production Design in 2003 for Road to Perdition (2002) by Sam Mendes starring Tom Hanks , Paul Newman and Daniel Craig . He, Richard L. Johnson, Jann K. Engel, Ted Haigh and Thomas Minton were also nominated for an ADG Excellence in Production Design Award . For this film he also won the BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design and was nominated again for a PFCS Award for Best Production Design and with Richard L. Johnson for a Golden Satellite Award.

Dennis Gassner received another nomination for the BAFTA Award for best production design in 2004 for the fantasy film Big Fish (2003) by Tim Burton with the main actors Ewan McGregor , Albert Finney and Alison Lohman .

He, Stefan Dechant, Christina Wilson, Marco Niro, A. Todd Holland and Christopher Tandon received another nomination for the ADG Excellence in Production Design Award in 2006 for the war film Jarhead - Willkommen im Dreck (2005) by Sam Mendes with the leading actors Jake Gyllenhaal , Jamie Foxx and Peter Sarsgaard .

At the 2008 Academy Awards , he and Anna Pinnock were again nominated for the Oscar for best production design, for The Golden Compass (2007) by Chris Weitz with Dakota Blue Richards , Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. For this film he won the 2008 ADG Excellence in Production Design Award with Richard L. Johnson, Chris Lowe, Andy Nicholson, Tino Schaedler, James Foster, Gavin Fitch and Helen Xenopoulos .

Together with his large staff, he was again nominated for the ADG Excellence in Production Design Award in 2009 for James Bond 007: A Quantum of Solace (2008) by Marc Forster with Daniel Craig, Mathieu Amalric and Olga Kurylenko .

For his work on the set of the James Bond film James Bond 007: Skyfall (2012) by director Sam Mendes with Daniel Craig, Helen McCrory and Javier Bardem , he received an ADG Excellence in Production Design Award .

In the latest James Bond film, James Bond 007: Specter (planned for 2015), Gassner is again involved as production designer.

At the 2015 Academy Awards , Gassner was nominated again for the Oscar in the Best Production Design category , again together with Anna Pinnock , for Into the Woods . In 2018 there was another Oscar nomination, now for Blade Runner 2049 .
