A normal hero (original title: Hero , English alternative title: Accidental Hero ) is an American film by Stephen Frears from 1992.

action

Bernard Laplante, called Bernie, is a hopeless petty criminal and notorious liar. His ex-wife despises him and his son is disappointed in him. He even steals from his lawyer during a trial. Following this stolen property trial , he will be released on bail of $ 5,000 pending the final sentence.

When he wants to pick up his son from the cinema, a plane crashes on a bridge right in front of him. First he intends to run away, but then he thinks about it and opens the door from the outside for the passengers trapped in the plane. He then wants to disappear again, but a little boy asks him to get his father off the plane. He saves everyone still trapped in the plane before it explodes. However, he cannot find the little boy's father because he had already escaped from the plane. Assuming that he did not save the father, he is so ashamed of the boy that he immediately leaves the plane.

He's three hours late to see his son, but his ex-wife doesn't even want to hear his apology. She doesn't let his son see him either. To make matters worse, his car breaks down on the way home. John Bubber hitchhiked him. After telling Bubber the story of the crash, Bernie gives Bubber his shoe because he lost his other shoe in the rescue operation and Bubber has a friend with only one leg.

The reporter Gale Galey, who was on the plane and was also rescued by Bernie, senses a huge story for her television station. The missing hero is wanted and her broadcaster publicly promises a reward of one million dollars for an interview with the lifesaver. John Bubber takes Bernie's shoe and pretends to be the lifesaver. Bernie himself is arrested by an undercover police officer when he tries to sell him the reporter's credit cards, which he stole from her old habit during the rescue.

John Bubber proves to be the ideal embodiment of the lifesaver for the public. Bernie tries to get close to Bubber to get the million dollars for himself, but he can't get near him. Gale falls in love with Bubber. However, when the police returned her credit cards, she began to have doubts. When she wants to visit Bernie in his apartment, they find an award that she had recently won in New York . When Bernie shows up, Bubber wants to throw himself off a high-rise at the same time.

Gale takes Bernie to the skyscraper to apologize to Bubber. Bernie goes to Bubber on the windowsill to speak to him. When Bernie smears his face with his dirty hands, Gale recognizes him again, as Bernie also had a smeared face during the rescue. Meanwhile, Bubber and Bernie decide to leave everything as it is and for Bernie to get some of the money. In addition, Bubber is supposed to stand up for Bernie in front of the judge, so that he suspends Bernie's sentence. When they want to get off the ledge, Bernie slips and Bubber saves his life.

When Gale later asks Bernie if he saved her, he denies it. However, she senses that it was him, and in private he finally confesses. During a visit to the zoo, Bernie tells his son the whole story. The film ends with a little girl falling into the lion cage and Bernie reluctantly becoming a lifesaver again.
