Stephen Harold Tobolowsky (born May 30, 1951 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American actor and author , best known for his supporting role as Ned Ryerson in the film Groundhog Day . He also played the role of Commissioner Hugo Jarry in the television series Deadwood in nine episodes and Bob Bishop in Heroes in eleven episodes . He was seen in the supporting role of Stu Beggs in the television series Californication . In total, he has appeared in over 200 films, making him ninth most featured in films on a USA Today list .

Life and accomplishments

Tobolowsky graduated from the University of Illinois and made his acting debut in New York . He had a bigger role in the 1976 horror film Keep My Grave Open . In the comedy Be Strong, Cassie! (1986) he was seen alongside Rosanna Arquette , Eric Roberts and Mare Winningham . In the film drama Grifters (1990) he played a jeweler who exposes the pieces of jewelry offered by the cheater Myra Langtry ( Annette Bening ) as fakes, whereupon she offers him her body.

In 1993 Groundhog Day , he played the supporting role of insurance agent Ned Ryerson alongside Bill Murray . He wrote his last scene in this film himself.

In the film Two Idiots in Hollywood (1988) Tobolowsky took on a supporting role, he also directed, wrote the script based on his own play, and composed the music. He also directed the short film A Host of Trouble (2005) with Julie Hagerty . In 2002 he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the play Morning's at Seven .

He also appeared in the second and third season, Robert Bishop in the Mystery - series Heroes with. In the first season of the musical series Glee he was seen in the role of the former Glee club manager Sandy Ryerson . He also played the role of film producer Stu Baggs since the fourth season of the television series Californication .

In addition to acting, Tobolowsky has been working on his podcast The Tobolowsky Files since October 2009 , in which he tells stories from his life, about love and the entertainment industry. This resulted in the e-book Cautionary Tales and the collection of stories The Dangerous Animals Club . In 2017 his book My Adventures with God was published .

Stephen Tobolowsky has been married to actress Ann Hearn since 1988 , lives in Studio City and has two children.
