action

Jake learns from his grandfather that he belongs to a dragon dynasty. However, he is the first "American Dragon", which is not exactly easy. The dragons' task is to protect all magical and mythical creatures that live hidden in the human world. To become a real dragon, Jake has to learn a lot from his dragon master, his grandfather. However, Jake realizes that the life of a dragon brings with it many problems and responsibilities. Jake is also being persecuted by the "hunter clan", an organization that opposes magical beings. Most of the episodes, however, are about the "American Dragon" managing to save the world.

Characters

main characters

Jacob "Jake" Long / The American Dragon
Jake is the hero of the series and a 13-year-old teenager. He is wearing a red jacket and blue shorts. He looks like any average person. He inherited the Chinese appearance from his mother. He reads comics, plays video games, goes skateboarding, and spends time with his best friends Spud and Trixie. But he has a great secret from his own father: he can turn into a red dragon.
His grandfather trains him in the art of kites. Because Jake Long is the first American Dragon. This means that Jake is the first person born in America with dragon skills. There are dragons all over the world, for almost every country.
Jake Long not only has to protect magical creatures, he also has to bring the everyday problems of a teenager under one roof. He is in love with his classmate Rose , but is too shy to admit it to her. Jake soon learns that she is the "hunter girl". But in the course of the second season, Rose and Jake become lovers.
Long (龍 Old Chinese, 龙 New Chinese) is the Chinese word for dragon.
Luong Lao Shi
Jake's (and Haley's) maternal grandfather, Luong Lao Shi, is a native of China. He is able to transform into a blue Chinese dragon. He was the protector of the magical creatures of China and is a member of the World Dragon Council . His best friend Fu Dog lives with him. He emigrated from China to teach his grandson the art of kites. His training methods for Jake Long are a bit strange: B. sweep the floor with the kite's tail or even clean the dirty toilet with the help of his kite's tongue. Lao Shi's identity is known to the Great Hunter. When he's not teaching his grandson the art of kites, he runs an electronics store. This has (as can be seen in season two) the numerical address 10048, which was originally the postal code of the World Trade Center . This should be a reminder of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 .
Lao Shi (老師 Old Chinese, 老师 New Chinese) is the Chinese word for teacher. But 老 can also illustrate the respect for an older, wise person, then Shi would be a kind of title for Jake's grandfather.
Fu Dog
The 600-year-old Shar Pei who lives with Jake Long's grandfather in his shop. He's been friends with Jake's grandfather for years. He is at Jake's side when there are problems, but also causes some. His thirst for competition and the growing mountain of debt that it causes is sometimes his undoing. He often talks to himself when he's nervous. Fu Dog also has strange friends like the grim reaper Marvie.
Arthur "Spud" P. Spudinski
Jake's classmate and best friend Arthur P. Spudinski is just called Spud by most. He is often a little slow and does not really notice things, but he has a very good heart and usually unintentionally comes up with very good ideas. He has a little feeling for Trixie. Only in the second season does it become clear that he is very good at handling computers and other technical devices. At first, he and Trixie don't know Jake is a dragon, but when they find out they do everything in their power to help him. There are some hints in the series that Spud might have a magical family background too.
The word spud is colloquially used for potatoes.
Trixie Carter
Like Jake, Trixie is 13 years old and goes to Millard Fillmore Middle School with him. Her hobbies are skateboarding, music and fashion. In addition to her temper, she often appears cheeky and tries to protect her friends. Jake's crush on Rose gets on her nerves, but she's in love herself and annoys Spud with it. Her mother is often on business as a pilot, which is why she lives with her grandmother, but you never get to see her.
The first sketches for the series show that Jake's best friends were originally supposed to be Jamal and Brooke. Her looks were different too: Jamal was a tall African American and Brooke was white.
Rose / the hunter girl
At the beginning of the series, Rose is new to Jake's middle school. She is tall, blonde and wants to prepare for her future. Its special feature is a dragon-shaped birthmark - the sign of the hunter clan - on the right wrist. This innate sign says that she is a born dragon hunter.
When she works as a hunter girl, her face is covered. She then calls herself Thorn - like the thorn of a rose. She is not a full member of the clan, but if she wants to become a full member, she must first kill a dragon. This is why she is so eager to single-handedly fight the American Dragon, whom she sees as her mortal enemy. As the series progresses, Jake shows her that he is the dragon. Due to this fact, she has not yet killed him, but it is still open whether she will choose him or the hunter clan.
She was told that her parents were killed when Rose was very young, and that is why she was taken in by the Hunter Clan and raised by the Great Hunter. In the course of the series, however, it turns out that Rose was kidnapped by the hunter clan immediately after she was born and that she still has a twin sister and her parents are still alive. During the second season, Jake and Rose become lovers and she secretly helps him destroy the hunter clan. In the decisive battle, Rose sacrifices herself for Jake, whereupon he decides to magically change her past. Jake wishes Rose had never been kidnapped. As a result, she can live in peace, but also no longer knows him. On the same day, she travels to Hong Kong. Only in the last episode is Jake allowed to contact her again because the dark dragon has returned stronger than before and apart from her, the "born dragon hunter", no one has "experience" with fighting dragons, although strictly speaking she never has Was a hunter girl. But through a photo that Jake still has of them both, Rose gets her memories back and can face the dark dragon together with Jake.
The great hunter
He is the leader of the infamous hunter clan. The hunter clan hunt magical creatures only for profit. They use the most fancy technology to hunt and catch the magical creatures. He is in fourth place on the list of threats to the magical world.
His face is hidden behind a dragon helmet and you don't know who he really is. In the first season his face is shown to be disfigured or deformed, but in the final fight in the second season he loses his helmet and you can see that he has a large dragon mark that extends from his chest to his face.
Besides other magical creatures, he is only interested in the American Dragon . He knows that dragons have a secret human identity, but has not yet been able to find out which American Dragon has. In the decisive battle, he and the entire hunter clan are destroyed, and so is Rose.
He particularly hates dragons, as you learn in an episode, because as a young member of the hunter clan he was humiliated by the American Dragon, who traveled through time. This incident also gave him his deep voice.

Supporting characters

Haley Long
Jake's seven-year-old little sister, Haley Kay Long, enjoys playing the violin and dancing ballet, and goes to a school for gifted children where these talents are encouraged. She can transform into a pink dragon (in episode 1 into a purple dragon), although she is still too young for dragon training. Jake thinks this is unfair as he only got his dragon powers when he was thirteen. With her dragon powers she helps her mother around the house. She mostly shows herself to be the good little girl and likes to tease her big brother with house rules. Originally her name was supposed to be Brittany.
Professor Hans Rotwood
Jake's teacher of mythology wants to prove the existence of magical creatures at all costs. He was kicked out of the university because he could never prove his theories. He is strict and tries to explain the mythical creatures biologically. But his explanations are far from reality. He always emphasizes the title of professor when someone calls him "Mister". He discovered Jake's secret in the course of the series, but did not make it public. He does appear to be suffering from some paranoid delusions, however. He can easily be described as "insane". In the course of the series he even becomes the headmaster of Millard Fillmore Middle School.
Brad Morton
The football star at Jake's school never misses an opportunity to annoy Jake. He is very self-confident, but also conceited and often only speaks of himself as the “Bradmeister” or “Bradstar”. He is Jake's greatest rival in the battle for Rose's favor. However, he not only flirts with Rose, but also with other girls he finds hot.
Jonathan Long

His wife Susan Long has been trying to tell him since September 1986. Nor does he know that mythical creatures live hidden among people, but he learns about it in the last episode. In contrast to his children and his wife, Mr Long is not a Chinese, but a typical American.
Susan Long (nee Shi)
Jakes and Haley's mother is the daughter of the dragon master Lao Shi. She has no dragon powers as her generation was skipped. But it is still important to her that Jake and Haley can control their dragon powers. Your job is to organize catering . Eli Excelsio Pandarus
He's a billionaire and playboy . He is called the "Magician of Wall Street " by the press . However, Pandarus is really a wizard and has mastered the dark arts. He is a descendant of Pandora and will stop at nothing to become the most powerful wizard of all time.
The dark dragon
The dark dragon is a great black dragon that deeply despises humanity. One knows neither about his human identity nor from which country he comes. Demonic shadows stand by his side. Jake Long first met him at the great exam on the island of Draco and was able to fight him successfully, which only his grandfather had before. The aim of the dark dragon is the rule of magical beings over the world. He is number one on the list of threats to the magical world. However, he was defeated by Jake and all of his friends, both human and magical. In addition, his partner Chang is on the World Dragon Council. After the last episode of the first season she is banished to the magical prison, where she breaks out at the end of the second season with a Chi doppelganger and tries to help the dark dragon come back to life.
Sun Park
The home economics teacher Jake, Spud and Trixi turns out to be in the second season as the Korean trains dragon, the Jake's little sister in the Dragon Art. She is almost never angry.
Sara and Kara - The Oracle Twins
You have the gift of clairvoyance . The twins are descended from the oracle of Delphi . They have no control over when they will have premonitions and most of the time they just blurt it out. At the beginning of the series, they are both red-haired, in the second season Sara gets blonde and Kara gets black hair.
Sara is a happy girl who can foresee the bad things. She is always in a good mood and emphasizes evil so beautifully that one might think she is looking into the bright future.
Kara, on the other hand, is a gloomy girl who can foresee the beautiful things. She is often in a bad mood - mainly because she can no longer look forward to the beautiful things that she foresees - and she doesn't care a lot.

The Gorgon Sisters
The Gorgons are Stheno, Euryale, Medusa and the previously unknown 4th sister Philathera. They have the ability to hypnotize people and animals, while Philathera, who is only to appear in the planned third season, can also change her shape.

Magical creatures

Numerous magical creatures that come from various mythologies appear in the series . They can be divided into the following categories:

Important creatures

Mountain trolls now and then terrorize the other magical beings with their motorbikes. They live in the mountains and are afraid of dragons and the sun because they freeze to stone when in contact with sunlight. When dragons offend their mother, they attack her too. Ever since the two defeated them, the mountain trolls have also been afraid of Trixie and Spud.

A herd of unicorns lives in Central Park . Their horn is said to be the hardest substance on earth and is in great demand on the magical black market.

Elves are tiny creatures with wings. They get irritated very quickly and get sick quickly. They live in small villages hidden in forests. In the magical world, they do the job of postmen too.

Griffins have an eagle-like head and the body of a lion. They only lay an egg every 1000 years. After the baby griffin hatches, the mother swallows it down. Griffon babies live in the digestive system for 1–2 weeks, after which the mother spits the baby out again.

Gremlins are small, furry beings who take apart all of the technical things to see how they work. The devices are destroyed in the process because the gremlins use their teeth to tear everything open. You can only catch them if you play them special aloha dance music that will make them fall asleep. Copiers and fax machines can reproduce real Gremlins and bring black and white versions to life.

Leprechauns keep a pot full of gold, which means luck. The protection of this gold is the most important thing for them.

Kumos are giant spiders with six eyes. If their legs are broken, they will grow back. Eli Pandarus uses them to protect his wealth because they can break anything, even unicorn horn.

Mermaids look like young women, only instead of two legs they have a fin. They live in water, but can also stay on land for a short time.

Mermaids look like people during the day. At night, when the moon is almost highest, they suck up human souls . Then when the moon is at its highest point, they turn into terrible creatures. They then resemble sea snakes with wings.

Ogres are roughly human-sized beings with greenish skin. Some are nice, others are bad or are easily persuaded to do wrong. You're pretty strong, but a little slow in thinking.

Dragon powers

The task of the dragons is to protect magical creatures that live hidden among humans. They have great physical strength, can fly and spew fire, ice, lightning, earth or other things. You can also change the shape, which must be activated by special spells. Another skill is that of creating a Chi doppelganger . But dragons cannot do anything against sphinx hair . Even the smallest amount makes the dragons weak. Dragons don't stand a chance even against the hardest material, unicorn horn . Plus, dragons can hear for miles and have incredibly sharp eyes that can even see through a blizzard. Jake can only call up a few of these abilities in his human form if necessary. So he can easily locate or eavesdrop on opponents.
