action

Mr. Peabody, a talking dog, is the smartest of his kind. He adopted young Sherman, raised him as his son and shared all of his inventions with him, including his greatest work: a time machine. Sherman spends a significant part of his childhood watching various historical events personally - such as B. the outbreak of the French Revolution . There Sherman meets the cake-loving Queen Marie Antoinette , but shortly afterwards has to watch as Maximilien de Robespierre arrests Mr. Peabody as an aristocrat and drags him to the guillotine . Thanks to his brains, Mr. Peabody escapes, duels Robespierre and flees across the Paris sewer with Sherman . Then he discusses the philosophical and political sides of the event with his son. Sherman asks what adventure is next - the next day is his first day of school.

Sherman shines with his knowledge of history classes; partly because he got to know George Washington personally and knows the truth about some anecdotes from his life. This annoys his classmate Penny Peterson, until then the best student in the class, who reacts promptly by throwing his food on the floor during recess and telling Sherman that as the son of a dog he should be a good dog and pick it up. Sherman responds by biting her arm. The adoption agency informs Peabody that if there is another incident with Sherman, they will reclaim him. The nasty and strong prejudices against Mr. Peabody harboring child welfare worker Mrs. Grunion is supposed to visit the family to see Sherman's living conditions.

In order to clarify this incident, Peabody invites the Petersons to her home that evening, as Mrs. Grunion is also supposed to come, to "break the ice". While he's entertaining Patty and Paul Peterson and preparing a gourmet dinner, Sherman is told to talk to Penny, which he doesn't like at all. Penny is also initially cool and arrogant, but finally demands that he tell her how he can know historical facts so precisely. Sherman was expressly forbidden from ever mentioning the time machine by Mr. Peabody. But he can't resist and shows Penny the time machine, which immediately goes on a trip. Sherman comes back alone and confesses what has happened to his father. Without further ado, Mr. Peabody hypnotizes the Petersons and wants to put everything in order.

Both want to pick up Penny in ancient Egypt . She is not enthusiastic, however, as she is to be married to the child king Tutankhamun , who adores her and reads every wish from her eyes. She intends to rule Egypt as his widow after the death of Prince Tut (who, as Mr. Peabody tells her, enters very early). Her hopes turn out to be deceptive when the vizier Aya explains to her that after Tut's death she would also be killed and mummified in order to be united with Tut in the afterlife for eternity . When she is about to go with Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Tut drags her to the ceremony; their companions are locked in a temple tomb. Mr. Peabody recognizes from Sherman's behavior that he is jealous of Tut, which he denies. The two fight their way through a series of traps and pick up Penny by pretending to be the god Anubis , who speaks out against the marriage. The dizziness is exposed, but they can still escape.

Since the time machine no longer has enough energy to get home, they put a stopover in Florence of the Renaissance , where Mr. Peabody meets an old friend, Leonardo da Vinci , who was tried in vain his image model Mona Lisa smile to elicit. After this succeeded with Sherman's help, da Vinci and Mr. Peabody build a machine that is supposed to generate energy; Meanwhile, Penny and Sherman explore da Vinci's inventions. Penny is enthusiastic about a flying machine and persuades Sherman to try it against his father's prohibition. He's disobedient, but Penny convinces him that, without any help from Mr. Peabody, he can do something great, namely fly. Despite the subsequent crash landing, da Vinci is delighted that the flying machine is working. Mr. Peabody is mad at Sherman; when they are back on their journey through time, he scolds him. Sherman replies that he doesn't do what he's told; he is just not a dog. The conflict intensifies when they just come across a black hole in the temporal structure.

After they make an emergency landing in the Trojan War , Sherman makes off and wants to join Agamemnon and others with the help of the Trojan Horse and enter the city center and fight the decisive battle for Troy. Mr. Peabody stands by him in spite of the argument, but when the wooden horse and Penny in it roll down a cliff, they seem to only succeed in saving Penny by sacrificing Mr. Peabody. Sherman is horrified and wants to undo everything by stopping events from the start; to do this, however, he has to travel to a time when he himself exists - and Mr. Peabody has strictly forbidden him to do so. Yet he does it; shortly afterwards Mr. Peabody, who survived, catches up with him; now there are two of the two in real time.

This irritates the Petersons and moves Mrs. Grunion to immediately remove both Shermans from Mr. Peabody's custody. The two Shermans and the two Peabodys merge again, but in the process create a rift in the structure of time: Instead of being able to travel further into the past, the past now comes to them. Old acquaintances like George Washington, Leonardo da Vinci and Robespierre turn to Sherman, Penny and Peabody for help or angrily, plus others like Ludwig van Beethoven , who promptly conducts a karaoke machine, Abraham Lincoln , who immediately starts a discussion with his colleague George Washington lets in, Marie Antoinette, who is excited about the next cake offer, Albert Einstein , who wants to solve the problem with the help of the theory of relativity , or Catherine the Great . Tut wants his bride Penny back, and Agamemnon falls spontaneously in love with the unfriendly Mrs. Grunion.

The situation worsened when a sphinx and other major structures fell on the city. Sherman has the idea of solving the problem by leaping into time; something previously untested. You try and you succeed. What belongs in the past returns there - Agamemnon takes Mrs. Grunion with him and marries her in its time. (In Greek myth, Agamemnon is later murdered by his wife) Sherman admits that if his father is a dog, he wants to be considered one and would not trade him for a human family. So he can stay with Mr. Peabody. The following day, Penny awaits him in front of school, and life is back to normal - even if Mona Lisa tries her hand at graffiti painting during her time and Prince Tut is celebrating a New York- style party in ancient Egypt .
