Megamind: The Button of Crime

Megamind is a CGI - animated film from DreamWorks Animation . Directed by Tom McGrath ( Madagascar , Madagascar 2 ). The film was released on November 5, 2010 in the USA and on December 2 in Germany.

action

Since his home planet is about to be destroyed by a black hole, his parents send Megamind away as an infant in a spaceship. Metro Man suffers the same fate on the neighboring planet. Both land on Earth in Metro City and grow up under completely different circumstances. Metro Man is adopted by a wealthy couple and turns into a superhero thanks to his superpowers . Megamind grows up in a prison to become a super villain with extraordinary intelligence. He is supported by his loyal assistant Minion, a fish with a gorilla-like robot body.

For many years, the two always fight according to the same pattern: Megamind breaks out of prison, devises a diabolical plan, kidnaps the attractive reporter Roxanne and is defeated by Metro Man. One day, however, he lures Metro Man into an observatory to fire a bundled beam of light at him. Apparently the copper dome inhibits Metro Man's superpowers and the beam of light burns him to the bone. Now Metro City is in Megamind's hands, but without an opponent he soon gets bored. He makes the decision to create a new superhero from the DNA traces of Metro Man. It is more or less by chance that the idiot cameraman Hal, who is in love with Roxanne, becomes the alleged Metro Man successor. In disguise, he mimes Neck's mentor and gives him the name "Titan", which he misunderstands as "Tighten" (German: "tighten"). However, this turns out to be an egoist who would rather commit crimes than fight them.

At the same time, Megamind discovers his affection for Roxanne, whom he approaches in disguise and wins her heart in the process. When Tighten discovers this, he terrorizes the city and wants to kill Megamind. Now it's up to Megamind to slip into the role of the hero herself. It also turns out that Metro Man has only faked his death, because he has had enough of the role of the hero and would rather be on the road as a musician Music Man. When Megamind and Roxanne find out, they ask Metro Man to protect the city from Tighten. But Metro Man refuses. Megamind has to fight Tighten with the help of Roxanne and Minion. He can finally remove the superpowers from Tighten and is celebrated by the population as a new superhero.

criticism

The film was received mostly positively. Rotten Tomatoes got a 72% positive rating based on 156 reviews.

Above all, many reviews praise the original story. Michael Föls wrote for Filmering.at: “Megamind is a very successful superhero persiflage that turns the tables and puts the villain in the center. The entertainment value is high, the action scenes are good and especially at the beginning everything works really well. However, it is a bit of a shame that the last third has become extremely conventional. But that doesn't change anything about the consistently high fun factor. "

Arne Hübler also praises the complex story: “Despite the usual childish and sometimes annoying humor, the animation work surprises with an unusually complex story for the cash-rich genre that willingly hooks. It goes without saying that the film draws from the rich stock of pantyhose heroes: the makers properly quote ' Batman ' and ' Superman '. Musically it is made on very thick pants. "

Sofahelden.com also thinks the animation is praiseworthy: “The story is finally something different, the swing from villain to good world saver is brilliantly staged. The drawings and animations are awesome, slowly this type of film is moving towards realism. The rainy scene in the city alone is amazing. The gags ignite and the different characters are designed with love and humor. "

On the opening weekend, the production, which cost 130 million US dollars, already brought in 46 million US dollars. In total, the worldwide revenues amounted to almost 322 million US dollars, of which about 4.4 million in Germany. The film thus ranks 14th on the list of Dreamworks computer animation films. At the same time it is the greatest international success of the leading actors Will Ferrell and Tina Fey .
