Shrek the Third is a computer animation film by the directors Chris Miller and Raman Hui from 2007. It was released in German cinemas on June 21, 2007. The film forms the third part of the Shrek film series after Shrek - The daredevil hero and its sequel Shrek 2 - The daredevil hero returns and was continued in 2010 by Shrek Forever After , the last part.

action

When Shrek's father-in-law Harold, the ruler of the kingdom "Far, Far Away," falls ill, he appoints Shrek as his successor as king. Shortly afterwards, Harold dies. Since Shrek has no desire to become king, he and his friends Donkey and Puss in Boots go in search of Fiona's cousin Arthur, the next member of the family to join the throne .

While Shrek is sailing away to find Arthur, Fiona calls after him that she is pregnant, which causes Shrek to have nightmares as the film progresses. He is afraid of the responsibility he would have as a father.

Meanwhile, Prince Charming, meanwhile an unsuccessful actor, tries to take the throne of "Weit Weit Weg" by means of a coup . He is supported by Captain Hook , the evil stepmother of Snow White , a Cyclops , Rumpelstiltskin , Mabel, the ugly stepsister, and an army of witches , elves and Ents . Pregnant Fiona, her mother Lilian and Doris, the other ugly stepsister, recruit four of Fiona's best friends: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty , Rapunzel and Cinderella . Together with them, Pinocchio , the three little pigs , the big bad wolf and the gingerbread man , they face Charming.

Charming's group storms the kingdom, but Fiona and her friends escape. On the run from Charming, however, they are betrayed by Rapunzel - Charming had offered her to become his queen - and they are put behind bars. Meanwhile, Charming sends a group to arrest Shrek and his friends. Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots and Arthur can drive away the bad guys. To get back home, they look for the old and confused school magic teacher Merlin, who promotes the four with a spell to "Far Far Away", but at the same time donkey and Puss in Boots swap their bodies due to Merlin's mistake. Back in "Far Far Away," Shrek is arrested shortly afterwards. To protect Arthur, Shrek explains that Arthur should only serve as a useful stopgap to the throne for himself. Charming then lets the offended Arthur go.

Meanwhile, with Lilian's help, the women break out. With “woman power” they manage to get back into the city. Prince Charming plans to kill Shrek during a theatrical performance. Shrek uses this to make fun of him. When the prince starts the fatal blow, the stage is stormed by Fiona and her friends. Arthur climbs on stage and convinces Charming's army that they too have soft sides and are good. Together with the dragon they manage to overpower Charming. Arthur then accepts the crown.

Shrek and Fiona return to their swamp, where they are happy parents to raise their three children.

Conception

As in the previous films, there are numerous references to other classics. For example, Prince Charming is killed by the falling tower in the final scene. The scene is based on the movie Hook , in which Captain Hook is killed in exactly the same way by the stuffed crocodile and, like Charming, calls for his mother.

Reviews and revenue

"Second continuation of the amusing and fast-paced cartoon adventure, which, despite all the visually successful (high-tech) entertainment, shows certain signs of fatigue."

The film received at Rotten Tomatoes , only a value of 42% and an IMDB value of 6.1 (9 July 2016).

Shrek the Third ranks 86th in the list of the most successful films without inflation adjustment (as of August 8, 2020).
