Damien Rice
Damien George Rice (born December 7, 1973 in Celbridge , County Kildare ) is an Irish musician and singer-songwriter .
biography
Damien Rice was initially the singer of Juniper , a rock band that released the singles The World Is Dead and Weatherman . Immediately before they were about to record their first album for Polygram in 1999 , Rice noticed the commercial direction he was being forced to take by the label and left the band. Juniper then became Bell X1 .
Rice moved to rural Italy and made the decision to return to the music business on his own. He decided to play the acoustic guitar and wanted to write his own personal songs. He traveled penniless as a street musician through Europe and eventually formed a band with which he played in cafes in Dublin. He managed to win the support of producer and film musician David Arnold , and so he was able to record his first album O , which was released in Ireland in 2002 and in Germany a year later. The Blower's Daughter and Cannonball became international hits.
His band consists of Vyvienne Long (cello), Tom "Tomo" Osander (drums) and Shane Fitzsimons (bass). There was a rift between his co-singer Lisa Hannigan , an integral part of many songs (especially on O ), and him during a tour in March 2007. Rice then stated on his website on March 25, 2007 that after "careful consideration" he had decided to part ways with Hannigan. After that, Hannigan was absent from the 2007 tour. According to Rice's statement, both have no plans to perform together again "in the foreseeable future" or to record something together.
The band toured often with The Frames . In 2003 and 2004 they played at the Glastonbury Festival , which was the first time Rice attracted attention in England.
In 2003 he won the Shortlist Music Price .
He sang She Moved Through the Fair with Joan Baez on January 27, 2016 at the Beacon Theater in New York .
