The Frames are a rock band from Dublin , Ireland . Your singer Glen Hansard is best known in Germany for his portrayal of Outspan Foster in Alan Parker's film Die Commitments .

Band history

Hansard dropped out of school at the age of 13, and at 17 he launched the Frames. He sent several demo recordings of himself to various record companies and was actually able to arrange a deal with Danny Cordell, who put him on to Chris Blackwell , the founder of Island Records .

The Frames are named after Hansard's passion, repairing bicycles. Their frames were often scattered around the family property and so the parents' house was jokingly called "the house of frames". The first line-up consisted of Noreen O'Donnell on vocals, Hansard and Dave Odlum on guitar, John Carney on bass, Paul Brennan on drums and violinist / keyboardist Colm Mac An Iomaire. The first performance took place at an Irish music festival. Hansard starred in The Commitments shortly thereafter and became known in the UK.

Her first single The Dancer was released in 1992. It was produced by Gil Norton , who had already worked with the Pixies . Her debut album Another Love Song, which was heavily influenced by the Pixies, was released in 1992 . This album is only available as a download today. Carney got out surprisingly shortly before an announced US tour, but was quickly replaced by Graham Downey. The tour had to be canceled due to the violinist's illness. In addition, the band lost their contract with Island Records. In 1994 ZTT signed the band. During the recording of Fitzcarraldo O'Donnell left the band. Joe Doyle joined as the new bass player. In 1996 the drummer Brennan got out and was replaced by Dave Hingerty. With him, the 1999 work Dance the Devil was published, which went more in the lo-fi direction.

With Overcoat the band found a new independent label . For the Birds appeared there in 2001 . After the release, Odlum left the band; with Simon Goode a new guitarist joined. A tour had to be canceled due to the death of Hansard's friend Mic Christopher of the Mary Janes . Glen Hansard wrote a moving obituary. The tour was later realized as the opening act for The New Pornographers . With The Roads Outgrown a collection of outtakes appeared on the new label Anti in 2003 . Burn the Maps followed in 2004 and Cost in 2007 . In 2007, The Frames supported Bob Dylan on his tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Hansard can also be seen in the lead role in the film Once ; The director is the former frames bassist John Carney. The soundtrack, in which Hansard was involved, was nominated for two Grammy Awards . In addition, the song Falling Slowly was awarded the Oscar 2008 in the category of best film song .
