The New Pornographers are an indie band from Vancouver . Their music was influenced by power pop groups such as Cheap Trick and The Cars as well as bands from the 60s and 70s such as The Beatles , The Byrds and The Beach Boys .

Band history

The group is known as an "indie supergroup " as the members were drawn from various local bands. The band includes Carl Newman (Zumpano), Dan Bejar (Destroyer), filmmaker Blaine Thurier (who shot some of the band's videos) and John Collins , co-owner of a studio in Vancouver. The best-known member is Neko Case , who played in several bands in Vancouver and began her now successful solo career in 1997. At the beginning in 2000 the band was a side project of the members. After the first successes, it moved more and more into the foreground for most members, so that the tour schedule collided with Case's. That is why a new singer, Kathryn Calder, was hired in 2005, who also plays the keyboard and has also been featured on all albums since Twin Cinema . Neko Case is still a permanent part of the band, although she can't be at all concerts.

The New Pornographers have so far played concerts in Canada, the USA, Europe (including Germany) and Australia. At the beginning of 2007 Japan was also on the tour schedule.

Band leader Carl Newman , who wrote most of their songs, cited Burt Bacharach , Jim Webb , Jeff Lynne and Brian Wilson as his influences.

The New Pornographers have released eight studio albums to date. Brill Bruisers was released in August 2014 and Whiteout Conditions in 2017 . In the first half of 2017 they toured across the United States with Waxahatchee from New York . Since they apparently had problems with their previous record company Matador , they first founded their own label Collected Works in 2017 , but then brought the new album Whiteout Conditions , which was first released there, to Concord Records . The band's eighth album, In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights , was released again on Concord Records on September 27, 2019 . It is the second without contributions from Dan Bejar and without drummer Kurt Dahle, who left in 2014 and was replaced by Joe Seiders. Simi "Stone" Sernaker, who has been the third singer, percussionist and violinist on all tours since 2015, is now an official member of the band. Several singles were released for the 2019 album: for example The Surprise Knock in August 2019, as well as "Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile (2019) and One Kind of Solomon (2019).
