Matador Records is an American music label . It specializes in independent music.

Matador was founded in 1989 by Chris Lombardi in his New York City apartment . A year later, Gerald Cosloy, the former operator of Homestead Records, joined as a further label operator. Since then, both have run the label together. In 1994 the independent label entered into a business partnership with the Atlantic Records label, which is part of the Warner Music major group . In 1996 Major Capitol Records bought a 49 percent stake in Matador, which Lombardi and Cosloy bought back in 1999. Matador has been part of the Beggars Group since 2002 and, in addition to its headquarters in New York, also has a branch in London. In September 2008 it was announced that Sonic Youth will release their 16th studio album on Matador.
