Bailter Space (alternatively also Bailterspace ) is a New Zealand indie rock band from Christchurch .

history

Before Bailter Space was founded, Alister Parker, John Halvorsen and Brent McLachlan first formed the line-up of The Gordons (later just Gordons ), which formed in 1980. By 1984 the group released an EP and two albums, which were mainly influenced by post-punk . In 2013, the self-titled debut album from 1981 won the New Zealand Taite Music Prize in the Independent Music NZ Classic Record category.

In 1987 Alister Parker and Hamish Kilgour from The Clean founded the band Nelsh Bailter Space , whose name was shortened accordingly after the release of a first EP. Soon after, John Halvorsen joined the group. Brent McLachlan completed the line-up after Hamish Kilgour left in 1989 to return to his original band. The first releases, like the Gordons ' records , all appeared on the New Zealand label Flying Nun Records . Stylistically, from the beginning they moved primarily in the intersection between noise rock and shoegaze , so that the band is not counted among the representatives of the so-called Dunedin sound .

After recording the first two albums Tanker and Thermos , the trio stayed in Cologne for a while before finally moving to New York City . From the EP The Aim , released in 1992, the group's records also appeared on the US label Matador Records . In their home country New Zealand, where they were still marketed by Flying Nun Records, Bailter Space recorded their greatest commercial successes between 1993 and 1997. The albums Robot World , Vortura , Wammo and Capsul were each in the top 40 of the charts.

After the album Solar 3 and the EP Photon , the band took a long break without officially breaking up. In 2004 Flying Nun Records released a best of compilation. More than 13 years after their last studio record, Bailter Space, sometimes referred to by the press as " Sonic Youth of the Southern Hemisphere", released a new album in 2012 called Strobosphere . A year later, the successor Trinine appeared .
